ESPN has suspended “First Take” commentator Stephen A. Smith for one week for controversial remarks he made when discussing the suspension of Ravens running back Ray Rice after an alleged domestic violence incident.

When discussing the incident, Smith said that a man can be provoked into hitting a woman, and should take preventative measures.

He will return next Tuesday.

Rice, who was charged with aggravated assault after video emerged of him dragging his wife Janay Rice Palmer unconscious from an elevator, was hit with a two-game suspension last week by the NFL.

ESPN made this statement about Smith’s suspension:

“We will continue to have constructive dialogue on this important topic. Stephen’s comments last Friday do not reflect our company’s point of view. As his apology demonstrates, he recognizes his mistakes and has a deeper appreciation of our company values.”
