This year’s Urbanworld Film Festival in New York City is right around the corner, and they have so many good things in store this year. From screenings to a fireside chat to a “Purple Rain” sing-a-long, it has everything the film buff in you needs. Check out what’s going on at the festival below.

Fireside Chat with Issa Rae, by Roland Martin

 

Best known for her hit web-series, The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl, the multi-talented Issa Rae, is a featured guest for the Urbanworld® Digital fireside chat with Roland Martin sponsored by NewsOne.  Rae’s producing partner, Deniese Davis, will also join her for a discussion on their current projects, including their latest venture Issa Rae Presents: ColorCreative.TV.  Whether talking about packaging content for TV or the web, these two women will share their journey, process, and models for discovering new talent and diverse stories, all without compromising indie authenticity.

Beyond the Lights

Catch the “Beyond the Lights” opening night film screening and panel discussion. Written and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love and Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees), Beyond the Lights tells the story of a talented young musician on the brink of super stardom struggling with the pressure of her newfound success.  The film stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle, Larry Crowne), Nate Parker (Red Tails, The Great Debaters), Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting) and Emmy Award nominee Danny Glover (The Color Purple, Lethal Weapon).  Prince-Bythewood, a longtime supporter of the festival, also serves as the ambassador for this year’s festival.

Addicted

Attend an evening with Zane and the men of “Addicted”: Boris Kodjoe, Tyson Beckford, Bille Woodruff and William Levy; in a Q & A and an exclusive look at scenes from the upcoming film. Addicted, based on the best-selling novel by Zane and a screenplay by Christina Welsh and Ernie Barbarash, is a sexy and provocative thriller about desire and the dangers of indiscretion. Successful businesswoman Zoe Reynard (Sharon Leal) appears to have attained it all – the dream husband she loves, two wonderful children and a flourishing career. As perfect as everything appears from the outside, Zoe is still drawn to temptations she cannot escape or resist. As she pursues a secretive life, Zoe finds herself risking it all when she heads down a perilous path she may not survive.

Purple Rain

Join the Purple Rain screening and sing-a-long. On the 30th anniversary of the making of the iconic American rock musical drama Purple Rain, Urbanworld® is hosting a sing-a-long in honor of the film in which Prince made his acting debut.  The film, which was directed by Albert Magnoli, and written by Magnoli and William Blinn, as a vehicle to showcase Prince’s talents, grossed over $80 million and went on to win an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score.

Condola and the Stoop Kids

“Urbanworld Music Features Condola and the Stoop Kids – Everyday People” presents the 8-piece rock/soul band, Condola and the Stoop Kids, in an edgy, live performance that features lead singer and Tony nominated actress Condola Rashad.
