Over the extended Memorial Day holiday weekend, a series of shootings in Chicago has left at least 56 people shot, including a 4-year-old girl. In the shootings, 12 people were killed and 44 others wounded.

On May 22 alone, 10 people were shot that Friday across the Chicagoland area, according to the Chicago Tribune’s shootings tracker. Many of the shootings occurred in the city’s South and West Side regions, areas where gang violence and clashes have been especially ripe in the past few years.

According to reports from NBC Chicago, the youngest shooting victim, Jacele Johnson, was shot in the head as she sat in a parked car outside a prom celebration in West Englewood last Friday.

The first of the fatalities was a 34-year-old Wicker Park man who was shot and killed on his porch early Saturday morning. The youngest of the recorded killings was a 15-year-old Bronzeville boy who was shot alongside another 14-year-old boy who survived the assault.

A 29-year-old woman was shot dead after a group of people were denied entry into a house party. Two men that accompanied the woman also suffered gunshots, but the men survived their wounds.

Officials report that shootings continued into early Tuesday morning.
