Jamycheal Mitchell, 24, was found dead in a Portsmouth, Virginia jail cell after being held four months over allegedly stealing a bottle of Mountain Dew, a Snickers bar and a Zebra Cake, reports the Guardian.

Natasha Perry, master jail officer at Hampton Roads regional jail, where Mitchell was incarcerated, said the death has been deemed “natural causes.”

If what his family is allege is true, starvation is not natural.

They believe not only was Mitchell denied food, but that he was also denied medical care.

“His body failed,” said Roxanne Adams, Mitchell’s aunt. “It is extraordinary. The person I saw deceased was not even the same person.”

Adams, a registered nurse, also said that her nephew had almost no muscle mass at the time of his death.

Mitchell was being held on misdemeanor charges of petty larceny and trespassing for the alleged theft from a local 7-Eleven store.
