Maine Gov. Paul LePage‘s racially insensitive remarks and conduct have gone too far—even for his GOP colleagues in the Maine Legislature.

State Republican Senate President Mike Thibodeau and House Minority Leader Ken Fredette said they plan to hold a private meeting with their governor before deciding how to muzzle him, WMTW-TV reports.

Thibodeau urged LePage to take “corrective action” for his “unacceptable” conduct to prevent a possible censure, according to the news outlet.

At a recent town hall meeting, the governor said he kept a three-ring binder with pictures of illegal drug dealers who travel to Maine:

“I don’t ask them to come to Maine to sell their poison but they come. And I will tell you, that 90-plus percent of those pictures in my book … are Black and Hispanic people from Waterbury, Connecticut; the Bronx; and Brooklyn.”

LePage dug a deeper hole when he defended his first comments by describing his state’s drug problem in terms of war:

“A bad guy is a bad guy. I don’t care what color he is. When you go to war, if you know the enemy, the enemy dresses in red and you dress in blue, you shoot at red. … You shoot at the enemy. You try to identify the enemy. And the enemy right now, the overwhelming majority of people coming in are people of color or people of Hispanic origin.”

The governor’s downward slide continued when he tried to apologize to the public for leaving a profane voicemail for state Rep. Drew Gattine. LePage accused the Democrat of calling him a racist and challenged him to prove it.

State Sen. Amy Volk revealed to her constituents in a Facebook post on Sunday that legislative leaders were considering a special session, and she believes “some sort of censure would seem appropriate.”

The lawmaker pondered whether LePage’s outbursts were the result of “substance abuse, mental illness or just ignorance.” Whatever his problem, Volk said the governor “appears to be out of control.”

LePage is no stranger to this type of controversy. Back in January, he was widely criticized for saying that the drug dealers who come to Maine from Connecticut and New York are nicknamed “D-Money, Smoothie, Shifty.” He went on to allege that these drug traffickers are getting White girls pregnant in Maine and then leaving the state.
