People Lil Wayne

NEW ORLEANS — Lil Wayne emerged as a top-selling musician known for his clever wordplay and risque lyrics, but like rappers before him, he’s staring down a year behind bars at the peak of his career.

The artist returned to his hometown of New Orleans for a performance Monday on what he’s calling his farewell tour.

“I’m nothing without you,” he told the screaming crowd of thousands of fans at the New Orleans Arena after opening the concert with “A Milli,” which last year earned him a Grammy for best rap solo.

The 27-year-old rapper, whose real name is Dwayne Carter, pleaded guilty in October to a weapons possession charge and will be sentenced Feb. 9. His plea deal calls for a year in jail.

The charge stemmed from a 2007 traffic stop of his tour bus in New York when authorities said they smelled marijuana, and as they approached, he tossed aside a bag with a loaded .40-caliber handgun.

In a separate case, he also faces trial in March on felony drug possession and weapons charges in Yuma County, Ariz. More recently, he had to postpone a show one day after authorities stopped two of his buses in Texas and found marijuana. The case has been referred to the sheriff’s office.

Some of those at Monday’s concert said they were disappointed with the rapper’s legal troubles.

“It’s kinda sad, the stereotype and that he fell into it,” said 19-year-old Lee Farrell of New Orleans.

Lil Wayne is set to follow some of rap music’s biggest names — from Tupac Shakur, Lil’ Kim, Beanie Sigel and Shyne to New Orleans natives Mystikal and C-Murder — who have served a few months to several years behind bars for crimes committed after they became famous.

Corey “C-Murder” Miller was convicted earlier this year of second-degree murder for the 2002 shooting of a fan during a nightclub brawl. He was sentenced to life in prison.

T.I. reported to a federal prison in May for his conviction on weapons charges. He is expected to serve a year and a day.

“I hope Lil Wayne will follow in T.I.’s footsteps,” said 32-year-old Jed Wright of Metairie, who brought his 11-year-old stepson to the show as a Christmas present. “T.I. promised to turn his life around. Lil Wayne can do the same thing.”

Lil Wayne has been rapping since he was a teenager. Over the past two years, his career has reached new heights with several Grammys and gold records. His “Tha Carter III” topped all album sales in 2008 with 2.8 million copies sold. The record had the No. 1 smash “Lollipop.”

“He’s very unique,” said 18-year-old April Nguyen, of Metairie, La. “He expands his genre, even does rock music, and is constantly reinventing himself.”

Lil Wayne’s next album, “Rebirth,” is due for release Feb. 1. After New Orleans, he is scheduled to play a couple of dates in Texas and another show in southern Louisiana.

We don’t need anymore thuggy ruggy rappers to be role models for our young people. I am not surprised. I do hope he meets up with the Lord in prison. Peace.

thats the problem people now a days look at celebrities as role models and they are not teach your children everybody has problems and sometime people do thing they have no business doing thats because they rap or act or play any type of sports does not mean that they cannot do any wrong….its up to the parents to teach them that…teach your children how to be leaders and not followers and if they follow know when to stop and make the decision thats going to lead them in the right direction…then as soon as one of these celebrities do wrong then evrybody wants to a negative things about them without realizing they too have done wrong or have skeletons in their closets that they dont want anybody finding out …so stop pointing fingers and just hope that they just learned from the choices they have made…thats alll…..lil wayne had an interview and said “do not make me your role model” he was being real about it…..

as long as black men, especially the popular ones, keep feeding into the hype that were all hoodlums, we’ll never get ahead. people luv to talk down on the ones that make it and don’t come back hanging around, it’s cause their smart. you’re labeled by the company you keep. the media is constantly making millions off their stupid actions. and i guess he forgot that he has a daughter, good example he’s setting for her, going out having all those kids. hope his albums keep selling, cause child support gone eat him up, a jail record and all those ugly tattoos gone make it hard to get any other job. lol

Everyones blaming lil wayne for things that there kids is doing maybe u should blame yourself cause u r the ones that r raising them u have a choice on what your kids listen to or do antill they become and adult and if they pick up bad habits its just that u aint paying attention to what there doing as a parent its okay to go out every know and then but if its and everyday thing thats why your kids do what they do..Dont blame the music blame your parenting skills….let that marinate for your ass…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CaliFemme23/ CaliFemme23

sweetcarmel029, smh….Im a parent so I had to respond to this one. Yes I agree that SOME parents dont pay attention to their children like they should..BUT society needs to STOP blaming US for what THEY put out there. I work, so therefore I can NOT watch what my daughters do EVERY second of the day..nor do I want to…I would prefer them USE their brains and what I have taught them. On top of that, kids/teens etc are going to do what they want to do at some point regardless of what parents knock into their heads. I dont know how old you are but I’m almost SURE you can congrue(agree) to that. I had GREAT parents, but did I STILL do stupid shyt? HELL YEAH I DID, just a part of growing up…Didnt take NWA or ice-cube or whomever to get me to act up as a teen/child…Lets lay the blame where it need be..on them bad azz kids out there!

He a good person,he seem to have a good heart…Regardless of what he do,he still gives back to his community…he does wats right…You dont hear him gettin on radio or in front of the cameras talkin about dat b***h aint my babymama…He take responsibilty of da s**t he do,so please lets stop knocking him for wat he raps abouts…PLEASE!

Hey I just wanted to give my commment about lil wayne I am a fan I hope that he does his time and this whole situation can be over. Why are we discussing the number of his kids are trying to take shots at him as long as he takes care of him it is none of our business. I dont see why we still blame artist rappers especially for what these bad ass kids do the blame goes on the parents if you raise them right as a child you might not have too much of a problem but yeah their still going to do some stupid stuff but hopefully you can minimize that factor. I think he’s going to be alright and come out of this on top and we should keep him in our prayers instead of criticizing every chance we get.

Lil Wayne is a talented artist no doubt, but besides that he aint s.h.i.t!! I’m tired of everybody feeling sorry for the dude like they really know him, or care for him besides his music. I think he should get more time seriously. If anyone else(non-celeberty), got caught with all those drugs, guns, ect…they’d be facing damn near life in prison. But because of his money, and celeb status, he gets a slap on the wrist. Same with T.I., he’s a cold piece work on the mic also, but he’s a convicted felon already, and got caught wit guns, and he only get a year locked up. That’s bulls**t. I was caught up myself yrs. back, had I not been a juvenile, I would’ve got 15yrs. for my gun charge. so I ask, what the hell is up with the court systems.

lil Wayne is the boy. It wasn’t him who had the gun but he took a charge and stayed true to the game. He is a good person and as we know snitching is not a good thing. Just ask a couple of your super stars who will snitch in a minute. You people need to stop hating.

Who told black people that tattoos were kool ? when will we seek who we are and who’s we are in an effort to bring about positive change in our lives ? when will we stop allowing ourselves to be portrayed as a systematic sub culture as opposed to the descendants of the great Kings and Queens of whom come from ? Are there not greater task at hand than romanticizing ignorance ? Praise HIM !Blessed Children of the MOST HIGH !
