I guess the question to ask is: What was the state of Black-on-Black Education BEFORE integration. Also, do those achievement levels change across state/economical/class lines?

I don’t completely agree with the author’s premise, as it denotes a sense of helplessness..as if we have to use a time machine to get back what was lost, instead of taking steps forward to gain something better..

But then again, I haven’t read the book. It might actually be a good read..

I wasnt around during segregation but from what I heard we stuck together more back then because we were all we had.

Italians got little Italy, Chinese got Chinatown,etc. meanwhile we LIVE IN HOOD but dont OWN much in our communities. THAT is a problem. that good job, house, car dont mean much if we cant pass anything on to the next generations.

no, i dissagree misz_pink_diamond because public schools are funded with property taxes. so when u see all the foreclosures, oversized police forces, and boarded up businesses know that ur local public schools are not going to be full of ipads, laptops, recent software, or even updated text books for every student. but yet, they will offer a free suplemental education for new teachers in illinois for teaching at one of these schools on “probation”.

the young (usually white female) teachers have no idea what these kids are seeing on the way home. they have no way of reaching them so they just get passed along knowing that failing a room full of young black students is career suicide. it may seem like a victimless crime, but children of these impoverished nieghborhood schools will have to work 3 or 4 times harder in college, just to be at a remedial level.

so im not going to say integration was bad legislation, but i will say the systems’ status quo has benefited directly ever since.

the problem is, with an integrated cirriculum, the dept of education has just about written us out of history. the corporations have taken over the education to dumb down the future adults to a point where even all the information on the internet is oblivious to them, with help from religion which teaches them to think irrationally, if they ever think at all.

Back in the day…my mother would explain to me how wonderful her college experince was (she attended NCC in 70′s all black college back then) how poor all her friends were but it didn’t matter everyone stuck together.. how teachers would invite her and her college mates over for dinner. A real personal experince, NOW I can’t even contact a professor to ask a simple question. So, what I guess I’m trying to say is…Blacks had at least ONE good resource that no one could touch UNTIL.

I think it’s interesting how the article touches on how we associate being academically successful with acting white. This seems to be especially true for black men. It’s funny, but true, that we lost our role models when schools became intergrated. I never really thought about it, but growing up, I would down-play my own intelligence to not want to stand out as a young black man. It was never cool to say “I need to study.” I guess, if my teacher was black, and my neighbors (successful or not) were black, I’d see more of what I had the potential to accomplish. Once the successful blacks could afford to leave black neighborhood, so did the idea that a young black man could reach their level. This article is actually kind of deep. I need to check out that book.

Before integration, Blacks with Masters and Doctorates could only find work teaching in Black neighborhoods. That meant black children were being educated by highly qualified black teachers and learning from advanced curriculums. Did we give up all that so we could eat next to white people?

Very interesting and this comes from a guy that is supposedly known for being “conservative”, but considers himself a libertarian.

Also, it is interesting that people overlook that integration was done on the terms of whites and at the expense of Blacks. So, even the term of integration is off, as it only occurred on the terms of one groups and didn’t even include such across the board in relation to schools.

A story about education,yet we are killing the language. An occasional typing error is understandable. But,I digress. Children learn what they live with. The images of caring and successful educators working with us daily was sadly removed. Successful examples of charter schools with caring black administrators are growing across the nation. Let’s put these examples to work in each major metropolitan area to recapture what has been stolen. No violence, No fanfare, No media….we quietly go about doing the work for our own.

There have been other studies that suggest Black students underperform in diverse classrooms.

We must find better ways to support parents and schools in arriving at more positive outcomes for more of today’s youth.

Interesting hypothesis. And I can clearly see how in an all-Black environment, the coolest kids would be the smartest kids that earned the best grades.

I’ve read some interesting responses in the discourse. As a father who recognized before my daughter became of age to attend school; it was my personal responsibility as a father to educate my child. It is why my wife and I homed schooled our daughter. Also, when you turn the socialization of a child over to another, the child will acquiescence to the values of the one or system exerting the greatest amount influence. What many us fail to realize is, it is the parent’s personal responsibility to educate your child. The public education system is only a facilitator of education. Therefore, it has no interest in educating children based on race. Moreover,before a theory is accepted, the background of the study must be researched, because studies are designed to prove what ever theory the person conducting the study wants to accomplish. For example, when Dr. Kenneth Clark wanted to establish a connection between racism and low self-esteem of young black children for Thurgood Marshall’s challenge to Plessey; he asked only one question “what doll is prettier, the white doll or the black doll.” The question did allow any explanation on the question. From that study Clark developed the theory of racism as the associative cause of low self-esteem in black children or negro children during the time. I studied under a black professor, a graduate of Harvard who stressed, we as a people must learn to become proactive instead of reactive to issues that impact black society within America.

That book is just to give us another excuse.Black people that go to school with whites are more educated then those that go to school with the majority.It’s not color input that kill us from learning better it’s us.Those that live in ghettos just act differently toward school because of how they was raise education wasn’t made firm enough in their lives,what really ruin Black education is us being segregated from the world behind invisible wall we call the hood this not only effect us but all “minority”.

Where is the self responsibility if we can’t stand up and ensure that our black kids stay in school and do well academically? What do you expect when parents are renegading on their responsibilities? Why blame the whitedman for our own failures, that doesn’t mean the whiteman didn’t do despicable things to us. We are no more slaves, we a free people with free will and free choice. What we decide to do with our lives is our responsibility, not that of the whiteman.

Isn’t it sad that in our own black communities, we make fun of black kids who want to embrace education, study and excel at it. We make fun of them and call them “ACTING WHITE”. Since when did the pursuit of academic excellence become the whiteman’s preserve? If we think education is only for white folks then black kids should not go to school at all. We should remain ballers and rappers.

You know the sad part? Ballers and rappers don’t make the policies that affects blacks’ lives. The policymakers are those who embraced education as the key that opens doors and didn’t see academic pursuit as “ACTING WHITE”.

Without education (and I meaning studious education, what we blacks call “Acting White”) we blacks will be relegated to the fringes of our own societies.

Education is the key, education is a positive attitude, education opens doors, education is not about “Acting White”, education is a studious commitment of one’s time, focus and energy. Education is an attitude.

I’m glad someone wrote this book. I write stories. I actually was going to write a book with a similar title. One of my friends told me the other day, well actually this month. White people or the white man knows everything. I was shocked to hear those words come from his mouth. I then knew he was a modern day Negro. He is scared to go and learn things for himself, he wants to lay on the white mans boots. You know the fool even said he wish he was like the guy from the blind side, that movie with Sandra Bullock. He said that because in his words white folks give u what you want, a car,anything you know like a spoiled kid, then this guy had the nerve to say that was love real family love. People this way of thinking is sad I really hope other black males and females do not believe this crap, if so that’s very disappointing to hear. I understand that certain black people aka African Americans do have to act white to keep certain jobs. I myself have to be real I can not be fake for anyone, I guess I will stay broke because I’m nobody’s fool and don’t have any plans to be soon. I just can’t see myself bowing down to a man or women cause they are white. That’s the dumbest thing I have every heard in my life. You only supposed to bow down to GOD and His son Jesus Christ. I believe someof you have ever come across things like “if you want to hide something from the blackman/woman, put it in a book”. I guess that one too is the whiteman’s fault. Competition is good, competition brings out the best in you. Being in class with other races who are doing well academically should rather motivate black kids to also do well.

I think there’s truth to be told here. The problem to universal acceptance is that integration doesn’t affect all black children the same. Some, because of socialization relish euro centered education and ignore the slights from white students and staff. However other blacks flatly refuse to accept the behavior from them and rebel in various ways. One primary problem facing young black minds is that many who are not accustomed to (been inoculated against their “racism”) other white children easily express anger and this makes for poor decisions and then it becomes self fulfilling stereotyping for European culture when these students act out and the european don’t even get their hands dirty, just point fingers and pass more judgements.

Mighty121: Where are you getting this argument about “it’s the whiteman’s faul.” The book does not seem to be saying that. It seems he is making a case that there is a correlation between desegration and the disentegration of academic achievement among African Americans.

educate yourself on black history. do not depend on school to teach you about what we should know about ourselves! i blame my own people sometimes not wanting to go seek knowledge for themselves. you have to go out and discover. you can’t gain any real knowledge if you want to stay in your own back yard. you know what my parents did for me, my sister and brother? sent us to a Saturday school for learning black history and getting to know where we really came from. and we did field trips and everything. it was fun getting to know who I was and learn things i would never learn in school. there an idea…maybe we need more of those schools then?!

Face it people..the world has changed! One upon a long time ago, even though our public schools didn’t have the best equipment or the most up to date books, we had Teachers who gave a damn. We had school administrators who cared about kids. I used to volunteer at my kids’ school before we decided to homeschool (again). There are teachers who hate their kids and don’t mind saying so. I heard a first grade teacher absolutely refuse to acknowledge kids she disliked. The kids….are already full of junk by watching too much tv…..and a lot of them are on meds to make them behave. Educating my children is my sole responsibility. So…will I teach them how to act white??? Of course I will and..I will also teach them more importantly on how to be Black. I will teach them our history. I will teach them our songs of slavery. I will teach them about trailblazers among our people and how we truly made it over. While it can be said that integration whitewashed us ….what we forget is while we were celebrating (falsely I might add) the opportunity to stand on equal footing with white America, we stopped being US….we stopped being PROUD of who we were and where we came from. We stopped striving for our people as if we’ve reached the Promised Land already. Integration should not be confused with assimilation. We no longer have a Black consciousness. It has wrongly been replaced with media spun ideology on who we are as a people. Mainstream media has been allowed to teach our kids lessons in life that should come from us parents. For us to reclaim our lost identity we must redefine what it means to be a Black person in America during this new millenia.

Judging from these excerpts, I will beg to disagree. I am a thoroughbred black guy born and raised in New Zealand. Throughout my Primary and high school, I was always amongst the top 5 out of average of 70. I also noticed that the same story applies to most black guys in my category in New Zealand.
I believe the secret to a child’s success lies with the parents. Most of the black parents living in New Zealand are doctors and engineers, their statuses have very positive impacts on their kids.
I won’t deny that we don’t get racial slurs or discrimination in schools in New Zealand, but with parental guidance and encouragements, we get through it all.

It’s strange this came up. We just took our kid out of the system to home school and it’s like deprogramming her. She has spent most of the last few months crying, because they never touched on slavery, the slaughter of the natives, or any real issue that involves our people or our view of this country. We had to break that news to her. Her hero was George Washington, until I informed her that he was a slaveowner. These are things I knew and understood at her age, mainly because I went to an all black school in Harlem, with all black teachers who did’nt just “let us pass”. They knew our parents, they came to our homes and checked on us, and corrected youth thugs on the street. Those were “Old School” black communities. We fought so hard to integrate that we forgot that their entire system is wrong. So now we are just happy to be a part of a flawed system that has never really made amends for what was done. No!!! I’m not blaming white people. I know that they have taken control of much of the world by force and it is in their best interest to rewrite history with themselves as the hero. They take great pride in their history, just as every culture should. The problem is that WE take great pride in THEIR culture. So our children begin to talk about their proud WESTERN heritage. Imagine that. However, it is in my children’s best interest to reject it and teach them the truth. I don’t believe in rejecting education as a whole, but I do believe in understanding the world for what it truly is

Trying to keep this brief, we lack teachers who care about making a difference and making a stand, we have plenty of people who are too worried about being overworked and the pay they’re receiving over the impact of their presence and influence. Integration has caused a lot of problems within the Black Community simply because we have sought to be like White people in more ways than one without realizing that we should’ve be maintaining our own identity first.

This day and age we value too many things that are insignificant and unimportant to any progress as far as life is concerned when we should be valuing intelligence, goals and unity. I agree wholeheartedly with Divainohio and her conclusions about the education of our children. If you haven’t noticed then you might want to take a look at recent developments in the education standard of Texas and Arizona in which they’ve pretty much erased cultural identity.

I agree with Richard Thompson Ford, Black Schools where turning out Doctors, Lawyers, Bankers, and exceptional Artist (singers, actors, writers).

Since integration of schools we’re not seeing that on as high a level as it was.

It is truly a shame that after all these years post slavery, we are still trying to figure out the difference between integration, segregation and assimilation. So, I have come to the conclusion that the word parts is definitely an important issue in order to participate in integration. However, Ezekiel Chapter 37 verse 11 says “Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel; behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.” On the authority of the Funk & Wagnalls NEW Comprehensive Dictionary, characteristics of the word part is defined as; 6. So much as is allotted or belongs to one. 8. A component or quality of mind or character:.
Conclusion; It is illogical to represent that we can compete on the World Stage when we present ourselves as ignorant to our history, culture, name, land and GOD. N****r, Colored, Negro, Black, Afro-American and African-American have one thing in common; They all were invented right here in America. When will we take charge of our future by due diligence in research and study to define ourselves and our relationship to GOD. Assimilation is just a euphemism for kissing white ass. There are only 2 kinds of ethnic minorities; the ones who kiss white ass and the ones who bite the bullet. I totally agree with this article. There are a blacks that America doesn’t show, those with culture, I find that most are from majority black communities… for example check out http://www.ymib.com , do you know these type of folks. Talk to your elders, they’ll tell you it was better before desegregation, our school systems were better, we looked out for one another, those who were going astray didn’t go to jail, instead they’re punishment was to guide them in the right direction. I personally believe that this issue of “acting white” is a psychological tactic used by white people to dummy down the majority of us, who have always been thinkers, strategists and readers, even pre-dating 1619. I have never liked the term because throughout my entire life, 99.999997% of Black people I’ve encountered, including family, friends, associates, business partners, workers, strangers, etc. were clearly intelligent people.

I totally agree that educational systems for Black people should be segregated, solely for survival purposes. Let’s get serious for a moment. Teachers who “really” teach do it for love and because they have a vision for their students. They know what type of scholastic and real-life challenges you are going to face and prepare you for such. You cannot expect a white person, no matter how sincere their intentions may be, to teach you from a loving perspective. My teachers taught me well in public school because that’s when we had Black teachers who really loved you and gave you the knowledge you needed as a Black man or Black woman in America. They didn’t beat around the bush about life. They taught us how to survive…and with dignity. “Brown Vs. Board of Education – Topeka, KS” might have done us more harm than good as far as education is concerned. Thurgood Marshall should have engineered a special clause that exempted Blacks from integrated educational institutions. Reason being is that, had we really needed to fight for, build, design, finance and manage our own schools form the poor conditions of the 1950s up until today, from grade level to university level, we’d be more successful, comparable to the Jews…”doin’ our own thang!” Also, the value of contributing 15%-20% of our investment dollars toward education would be a no brainer, especially when you can see the actual ROI (return-on-investment) through a well-educated Black population who own and control businesses, real estate, international trade relations, political power, etc.
White people have a vision for us, too. That’s where this “acting white” myth comes into play. They want to keep us thinking that we never done shyt in this world, have no history, are a confused, shameful, poor people who never seem to do well. It is a known fact that young Black males are undeniably destined to confront racism in the early stages of education, which is the leading cause for high drop-out rates. Young Black males need to be taught in schools where they are loved, protected and given a thorough education, just like they do in Jewish schools.
Everything in Amerika doesn’t need to be integrated, especially education. I am an ardent supporter of charter schools and gender-specific schools, especially for young Black children. The public schools in most Black neighborhoods are either being shut down (and never rebuilt!) or designed to fail through divestment or reallocation of financial resources to wealthier neighborhoods (Chicago, Illinois).
Education, like our health, is crucial to our survival as a race of people.

If you are taught the value of education and it is reinforced by your parents, peers and role models, it doesn’t matter if you are in an all-black environment or an integrated one. Some things were better before “integration” but many more were not; some people look at the Jim Crow era as a golden age for black folks, but it was not; yes, we did look after each other more so then than now,but there were still gang bangers that shot other black people; some black business prospered while others failed for lack of being able to provide more of what people wanted; our schools lacked basic equipment and kids should not have to make do when it comes to learning. Part of the problem now, is that as a group, black people have gotten comfortable and while we still have our “spark” we do not strive because we feel we do not have to, since things are better (They are) I know how it was in the pre-civil rights era because I was there, not because I read it in a history book or because someone told me.

I hate to tell you all this but education has been dumbed down for years and it is wealthy America that did this. I grew up in the desegregation era and they dumbed us all down. They thought mistakenly that blacks were not on the level with whites so they regressed classes. This was wrong and should not have happened. When I was in 4th grade I was being taught math that is now 6th grade level. When I went into 5th grade we were taught at 3rd grade level. I was lucky enough to have a black male math teacher that saw I was bored and started challenging me and a few others both black and white whom he knew could keep up with the subject so by the time we reached 8th grade we cruised through Algebra 1. He had no care about black and white just cared about minds. Blame the wealth of America and the idiots who think when you dumb down a population you can control it better. Read history and how populations are controlled by dumbing them down.

At one time the black community was self-sustaining. Even though it was by the rule of law we had black businesses with black dollars gain by black education. Not all of these thing were perfect, but they were ours. But somehow someway the thought of not being seen as equalls by mainstream America burned in the back of our minds. So, we sought to prove our equallity, hoping for better civil rights and better tools to use to support our family and better education. But we have been fooled and now only better off as a people in appearances but not within. Our attempts at equallity has only diluted and serparated ourselves from our chance to strive. We tried to extend our hands in fellowship but it has been slapped away, so now we need to come home to our own again. We wanted so hard to have acceptance only to get what we have ask for and what has that done. Your cannot force yourselves to accepted by anyone and the fight has made us weary. We need to come back to a time of black businesses with black dollars gained through black education.

I went to an all black catholic school up until the 8th grade.When we had to go to the white catholic schols obviously it was different.We were tolerated but my ego and selfworth was different.I was a good student and an athlete.I had a Nun who taught Geometry in the 11th grade whom I just couldn’t understand.She said I was not doing my best so I received an F for the first time in my educational career.I went to a public school that summer and made an A.The teacher was a white male whom I understood and he even had me helping/tutoring other students in the class.Ironically,I am now a teacher in the public school system and I always normally get positive results because I expect/demand/help/motivate all kids(no matter what they look like or come from)..So my life experiences helped me to answer my calling…BTW–I’m damn good at what I do…Peace

The ending of the two parent home in the Black community has a direct correlation to why our children underperform in schools not integration. We can make excuses and blame whites all we want but with 70% of Black children being born out of wedlock vs. 10% during our grandparents’ generation. Its plain to see that you take mom, dad or both out of the equation and you have poorly disciplined children which make poor students. Then add the addiction to public assistance, crack cocaine and white liberals finding excuse after excuse to keep Black kids in poorly performing schools and you have what you have today.

Yes I believe that it was desegregation that destroyed thriving black schools where black faculty was role models nurtured excellence among black students. Today that is what is hurting Black People, we want to depend on other races to help us and not on each other like we should. Before desegregation, Black people had to use Black Lawyers, Black Doctors, Black Accountants and other Black People for whatever we wanted done. Now we depend on everybody but ourselves and that is where we get hurt. We must keep the dollars in our neighborhoods as long as possible. After the WWII the Asian made sure that they could never be rounded up and imprisoned by becoming a power to be addressed with respect. The Asian Community have their own stores, banks, schools and others business that keep their dollars in their community. Black People must learn to depend on other Black people only! GO to the Black store! GO to the Black owned car dealerships! GO to the Black owned reality companies. WHEN A BLACK PERSON SPENDS A DOLLAR, MAKE SURE IT IS WITH A BLACK OWNED BUSINESS!!!! Once the Black communities keep all of our dollars in our neighborhoods then other businesses will come to us with respect, not because they love us, but because of the power that our communities will have acc**ulated from the “Power of the Dollar”!!!

We already learned that “separate but equal” does not work. Integration was the answer. You may have all black schools but the quality of those schools were and will be again, inferior to majority schools.
You can talk all you want about black underachievement since integration but show me a time before integration when we had more black millionaires, more black scientists, scholars, or politicians. Show me a time before integration when a black had a hope of becoming president.
Of course the enemy wants you to segregrate- not because integration has failed- but because it has worked.

I think back to when I was in grammar school and when white teacher’s used to say I acted white because I knew certain things and when some blacks hear that they think that your better than them. So you have this mindset of trying to act stupid or be anti-school. And because of that it has caused major problems with black people. I’m not saying that there are not blacks teacher that have not played a part in this,but when you see teachers they are white young and women.We don’t ask ourselves who is teaching our kids? Yes it starts at home but we have to understand for 8 hours 5 days a week 8 to 9 months they have major interaction with our kids.We better wakeup and understand that they had nearly 30 plus years to f**k with our heads. I went to College, and did not know a damn thing regarding Computer Science. Everybody else knew before hand what that mess was.

I wish I could say that this is the most preposterous crap I’ve ever heard, but, lately, I’ve been wading through a lot of it on this site. I can’t help but wonder about the age range of most of the posters to this article. I think a lot of people are forgetting that during segregation, part of the bull-s**te of the time was that the schools, along with social services and various facilities, were supposedly “SEPARATE BUT EQUAL”. But, as any elder will tell you who was around during jim crow and remembers what it was like to use a “Colored” bathroom as opposed to a fancy “Whites only” bathroom or had to sit in special sections of buses and movie theatres, “separate but equal” was beyond an insult.

The racist reality is, that for those schools who relied on public funding, what was being offered to African-Americans schools was DRASTICALLY LESS than white schools and as a result the schools were of lower quality than white schools. Hmmm…and somehow…inequities STILL exist between predominantly Black vs. predominantly white schools. And as for the “empirical studies that suggest a correlation between integrated schools and social disapproval of academic success among black students”, I think that too many people are forgetting how the variables of poverty and class can often be “the great equalizer”. Many poor whites and other poor peoples of color have also had a similar history of “misery-loves-company and you’re-trying-to-be-better-than-what-you-came-from” issues in this DUMBED-DOWN, capitalist, consume-til-you-die crazed country we live in. It’s definitely NOT just a “Black thing”.

I grew up in the 70s and 80s in schools on the racially divided south side of Chicago and I vividly remember watching the news reports from Boston during the insanity over their busing issues. So many white adults shrieking and frothing at the mouth in the streets while little quiet Black kids stared out of their bus windows. How dare anyone try to deny these kids the right to an education that was on the same level as their white peers? I remember what it was like to feel that something was majorly lacking in our old textbooks and school materials and the nagging feeling of not being challenged enough. I’m grateful for the efforts of many of my grade school and H.S. teachers — Black, Latino, Filipina and white. Even though they taught at all Black schools, the words “limit” and “segregated” were not in their vocabulary. They helped open our minds to a multicultural world and never let us forget that we were just as crucial and deserving as white kids (or anyone else for that matter). I honor my ancestors and my African roots, but this is not Africa. I know this will be a big blow to all the lurking klan members and tea baggin’ Glenn Beck/Rush Limbaugh fans, but America is NOT a homogeneous society. It makes no sense to limit our children by keeping them in segregated learning environments. They deserve the best of ALL worlds and to be taught with the same caliber of teachers, textbooks, lesson plans, etc. as non-Black kids.

Integration was and still is The white man’s reactive approach to the studies of the so called “Two America’s-Separate and unequal” Thesis in the mid 50′s used in the Brown Vs Topeka, Kansas school Board. The study revealed that even though Blacks were a minority in America, and were forced to develop what few institutions they had; (including “Black”education)then the Government of The United States would soon be forced to deal with the rise of a Foreign Nation within their borders, that could successfully rise up and rival those already established in country. They needed to ensure that the government was in charge of the indoctrination of the children of their former slaves, so they might secure the future for their white children for at least another 2 generations. Desegregation acknowledged the superiority of the so called white school system over the Black school systems throughout America, and a concerted effort to transfer Black Children to white schools had begun. No white children had to be transferred to traditional “All Black schools” ever. They wanted to guarantee that the school systems that produced such giants as W.E.B. Du Boise, Booker T Washington,Martin Luthor King Jr would never again raise up others to challenge white authority in America ever again. For the most part their plans have only delayed the inevitable, but many Black People in America have bought into the concept that they are no longer second class citizens, and that they can achieve what they will if the surrender their will to their 400 year old enemy.

“Little Wayne” and other anomalies like himself are the result of this prolonged attack on the Black Education system. Instead of producing the Stokeley Carmichael’s and Marcus Garvey’s of previous generations we are stuck with a myraid of players mass produced by our enemy in the entertainment industry. These props have nothing to say or do that remotely reflects community or family values required to salvage our future generations. Integration deprived Black kids the opportunity to learn survival skills in previously all Black schools. Black teachers made sure that Black kids learned how to survive and succeed in a white world. That bit of schooling was lost with forced busing of students and teachers.

(Sigh…)…A lot of people are missing the point about desegregation. It’s not that desegregation means “purely black”, “antiquated”, and “isolated”. Quite the contrary. The whole idea is to right the wrongs of desegregation and prioritize the education and well-being of our children. That doesn’t mean that you isolate yourself from the rest of the world. That would be cultural genocide. What I’m arguing for is the control of the quality of education, specifically for Black children, primarily since they have been the victims of desegregation. and part of the control would include the quality of teachers who are a part of the schools’ structure, as well as the content of the curriculum. Some of you stated that you are “home schooling” you children, which I think is an outstanding alternative to abysmally poor-quality schools. You’re obviously doing this because you love, care and are deeply concerned about your child’s future in this unforgiving and extremely competitive world. Serious parents make these kinds of sacrifices. Also, it’s pretty obvious that the public school systems have let our children down and leaves them unprepared for this environment. Again, I could care less what others think about Black people being “multicultural” and “diverse”…I’m going to make sure that my children know the fundamentals of reading, writing and arithmetic and is trained and developed with marketable job/business skills. We can play those “me-too” games later on, just like the Jewish schools, who don’t give a phuck about what society thinks about them, but look at how well-educated and prepared their children are to take over these corporations around the world! Again, Black people have to get in the thought process of controlling and securing our destiny and place within a competitive world, securing educational and business resources for “our” survival. Uh uh, integration is black people’s fault and our fault alone. Remember? Again, you had to have been there. Forced busing was offered as a way to settle lawsuits brought by Blacks that their separate but equal schools were anything but equal. Books, educational programs, and equipment were shoddy and lacking in all black schools. The lawsuits across the country were meant to correct this inequality. Whites offered busing to “integrate” education; we went along. Affirmative action was another ploy of misdirection offered by whites to avoid correcting inequalities wrought by their racism. We went along.

the good part is that ALL of these comments are a testimony as to how TRULY gifted and INTELLECTUAL black people are…………..the sad part is that the reality is……..there will never be black “unity” because as you can see, black people can’t agree on what’s best for black people…………fin!

I went to grade school in the early 50s. This was before busing. I went to school with mostly Jewish kids. There wasn’t the hostility associated with forced busing, but the instructors have always had low expectations of blacks because they were brainwashed to believe we were inferior. I had given some thought to the education system, but always believed that if we were more involved as parents in our child’s education, it wouldn’t matter if the person they sat next to was green or blue.

What I do know is I have always felt that integration was not a good thing economically for the black community. Before integregation, blacks were forced to do business with each other. After integration, most of us hurried to give our hard earned dollars to everyone except our own black busineses and continue to do so. And like whites who think us inferior, we had been told for so long that we are inferior, we believe it too. A lot of us think the white man’s juice is sweeter so we don’t trust anything black. Sad.

Its not the matter of wanting to be accepted by whites, its the fact that based on quite alot of factors—black people on average are not as wealthy as white people. So exactly how could we as a whole provide schools for our children when we cant even provide food for them? Separate but equal never did ANY good back then just like it wouldnt do any good now. It makes no sense to isolate, when the world isnt like that. So we’re going to cheach them about the holocaust, yet never meet a jew? Teach about slavery yet never meet a white person? Awwww, your post is well meaning…BUT you don’t actually ‘GET’ the issue at hand.

Your choice of terminology proves that. You used words like..’isolated’ and ‘separate but equal’…And in all honesty, YES, the majority of black people today feel that if they aren’t accepted or recognized by whites, then they haven’t truly climaxed or reached that highest plateau of success.
The average black person in corporate america, (I cringe when I hear that phrase…), doesn’t strive to open his own business at some point, he only strives to either slide into the white guy’s position OR at the least, sit right next to him in the ‘boardroom’. That’s not success in my opinion, that is only assimilating. Sitting next to the white guy doesn’t help the black community, breaking AWAY from the white guy does.
Therefore, you have something to pass down to your children in order to keep your hard work and legacy going.

Me personally, I don’t see separating from whites as being ‘isolated’, thats what THEY want you to think. I never thought to myself, ‘hey lets all go live in a cave away from the white folks!’…Nah not at all, we should really have our own, boost our own economy by shoveling black dollars into black business’. I know I would if it were available in mass amounts like it is for every other race.

Question though: Why is it every other race can do for themselves, build their own communities and basically take care of their own, and it’s considered positive and progression. But when ANY black speaks of doing the same exact thing, its called isolation, racism, black supremacy and any other negative word you can think of?

my four uncle’s went to segregated school’s and all of them went on to gain a college education. one of my uncle’s was my high school principal. i agree that white teachers have low expectations of black students, and this has led to the problems some black student’s are experiencing in the public school’s.

Whether you guys see it or not, there are two issues here. We have the white teachers that don’t respect or have low expectations of the black students. Then you have parents that just don’t care or don’t have the education themselves to help the child. But there is a third, what about the black teachers who don’t care and just in it to get a pay check?

The quality of parenting is damaged dramatically because you have babies having babies. Hear me out here; these babies that are born have to rely on parents that don’t have no family values, no education, no job, no parenting skills and think the world suppose to give them everything on a silver platter. This is who these babies raised by. You break this circle of failure and you will see a big change.

As for the white teachers that don’t respect other cultures other than their own. Their days is numbered, I wouldn’t worry so much about them or the unfair treatments. In order to destroy them, you must educate yourself with the proper tools. Make yourself an equal counter-part, meaning get your degrees in a skilled trade. Make it hard for them as they have for you. Believe it or not, no employer will turn you away if your at the top of your game. I know, because I live in that world where whites do try my intellect. Most of them walk away and others embrace my logic.

For the black teachers that don’t care. You are considered to be sell-outs! You would do your own heritage wrong to get ahead. I feel sorry for you because your helping them destroy your people. Tell me something; what do you think they are saying about you behind closed doors? Of course they will never say it to your face because your a good nikka and they want to continue to use you.

These three things have to change before the quality of education for our black kids is better. I’m not saying that I’m totally right but it is my opinion. Get pro-active and stop sitting on the sidelines. Its like being in a group project and voting on a resolution. If you don’t speak your peace, things are likely to go in a direction you don’t want it to go.

Im stunned..do you really believe that the white way is the proper way to educate everyone? And yes the white way is the predominant way in our society. so you don’t mind the absolute erasure of our history and accomplishments? The educational system only speaks of blacks during ONE month, (the shortest month), out of the year and they only speak of a handful of blacks in history and the story is NEVER the truth as WE know it to be. So you find it ‘ok’ that schools only teach our children about Oprah, Harriet Tubman and MLK? Is that the ‘ONE WAY’ you were speaking of?

No offense, but I hope you don’t have children, and if you do, and you don’t teach them on your own, to hit home an understanding of our true history then you are failing them as we speak…

LOL!…I usually come on NewsOne to write a few bullshyt lines about the crap they call “news”!!!…(lol!)…But this blog, man!..It has got to contain some of, if not the best, highly though-out, intellectually stimulating and very deep commentary about one of the most extremely important aspects of being Black people in the 21st century! Really, I fully respect and have read in thorough the comments, reflections and alternatives we’ve come up with. As stated before, I don’t think that it’s because Black people don’t care about our children. It is clear from the lessons we’ve learned about “integration” and its after-effects that, on the second time around we will definitely and undoubtedly be making stronger, wiser choices and options for our children. Why? The children are the future, and our greatest enemy is time. Before you know it, as parents we’re up against monsters such as our present, dire situation of today’s educational system.

there was a beatiful scene in the movie “BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE” where the socalled ‘indian’ boy was in a missionary school. this europeon lady asked the class a question, and this young man raised his hand and had the correct answer but his answer was unacceptable to the european lady cuz he did not use a ‘christian’ name. since he stuck to his indigenous name, he was ignored. they did similiar thing during the Spanish Inquisition. same with missionaries in Africa, snatch the children up and program them early. circus-lions with their manes permed, fangs missing, claws clipped, drinking milk outta baby bottle. you already know lol

Lol Cali now Im confused…I mean I have no problem with CATERING to our own, and focusing on uplifting our own. I just dont see how that has anything to do with integration/segragtion. If I as a child, wanted to accomplish something great for the sake of my race (which is coincidentally my goal) being in a classroom with whites wont change that. I could be the only black person in the class (which has happened in all of my years in college taking pre med courses) and it still wouldnt deter me from my ultimate goal, OUR progression.

I just want to say that I have enjoyed reading these comments. I have experienced being in an all black school back in the 60′s. We had our all black staff, and our own black band, sweethearts ball, sports team, you name it we had it. Our teachers cared a lot about us, and failing was not an option. You were expected to learn. Shortly afterwards, I went to a desegregated school. There was a huge difference to me. Honestly, I was raised in a white town, so we were expected to learn as well. Nowadays, in the States especially, the teachers could care less about the children. I worked in the school system and in group homes for years. So many of you are right, the expectations are so low. SoularFlarez, whenever my granddaughter came to visit us in Canada, I made here watch Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, and we discussed the movie. I watched that movie at least 3 times. I learned something new everytime I watched it. I encourage all of my grandchildren to get their education. I make up their cirriculum whenever they visit with me. I send them books and magazines to read. God willing, I will be taking my granddaughter to South America next year.
So many of you are right whenever you say that it begins with the parents. It is true, some of these children are having children and really do not want to be bothered. I see so many parents who are going to school and leaving their children with any and everybody. Lots of them don’t even have time for their children anymore. And then we wonder why our children are failing in school, and cannot half read. We to need to get ourselves together, and get our education before we get our children.

Mmmmm that’s in part, the message so to speak…Not that we must ‘befriend’ all whites to be successful. But yet we NEED to be a part of their society, culture,(HA!), and lifestyle to be recognized. That’s what the ILL outcome of integration has done to us.

See, we NEVER really wanted to, nor was our goal to assimilate into the white world. We were actually trying to break away from that. HUMAN rights should have been the sole purpose of the ‘fight’/movement. We should have never fought to sit next to whites, go to school with whites, eat with whites, drink with whites, LIVE WITH WHITES…
Our fight would have served a greater purpose, had we strived for our OWN in this world. Whites had their feet on our backs for so long that its painful to see, hear and witness the blacks who clamor, struggle, live and die to be among them JUST for validation.

This problem goes back as far as time its self. Every race that conquered another race was forced that race to learn their religion, language, culture, foods, and even changed their names (remember Daniel)? This practice is nothing new, nor will it go away. “Those that don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it”. What is truly amazing that I read some of the comments accusing Dr. King of trying to “integrate” blacks into the white society. Lest we forget the bigger picture: Black people were getting beaten and killed BEFORE he started ‘assimilating’ blacks into the white culture. Dr. King and other leaders were trying to save black people lives not looking at the side effects of their actions.

Integration was bad when black people started looking at white people as superior instead of realizing the power that they weld: The power of history. We should have been building our communities up, educating our kids, and providing our own jobs. Instead, we conformed to being lead, instead of doing the leading. Now, looking back at Daniel, he showed you that he and our people did not bow down to the Babylons but instead rose up and lead THEM. The same with Joseph, and so on. I could name many great historical figures that didn’t conform to the society that presided over them. Our leaders didn’t learn from history and they repeated……we are still doing it today as well.

“Integration” and assimilation started when the Europeans dragged our ancestors to the Americas on slave ships, and has continued as a gradual and continuous process. You’ve had no control of it. There’s not a lot that you can do about it, unless you move to Africa, and surprise, they don’t care much for us either. Evidently, there are those of us who, to their credit, have honorably resisted this process. There are degrees of integration. We’ve been given European names, religions, rituals and customs over the centuries that we’ve been here. It’s what makes us American and unique. Like it or not, we’ve been “integrated” into each and every war that this country has fought in. Let’s have some perspective: Most of us couldn’t tell you which parts of Africa we originated from. A real African (born in Africa) would tell even the most ghettofied project-claiming brother that he is “acting white”, relatively speaking. When you act like a thug or gangster you are merely imitating white American gangsters. Hip-hop acts name themselves after white American gangsters from the 1930′s. “Scarface” posters are prominently posted in our homes much in the same way that blond-haired, blue-eyed Jesus was in a generation or two ago (or even now). It’s all relative. But you know what? Most Africans would love to switch places with you. That’s right, and tell me that I lie. Even Africans are “acting white” or black American because they want the same things that we as Americans want and have. They emulate what we, as black Americans do in this country. The women in many African countries now imitate black American women and wear some of the same “relaxed” hairstyles. The funny thing about Africans is that they often speak more than one language, unlike most of us, and in the former British colonies, speak English better than most of us here in the ‘states.

Whether you speak English clearly and accurately and are fairly literate, wear your hair straightened or natural, Muslim, Christian or Hindu we, as American Blacks are all acting “white”, to one extent or another, and like it or not, we are all hard-wired into this thing called America. What I do know is that by and large, if you’re going to make it here, and I mean that collectively, we are going to have to grow up eventually and pull our pants up, be more responsible for us and get some real knowledge about how things work.

A black American person is also acting black whether he or she is speaking properly, sagging his pants, straightening her hair, running the country or running a craps game. It’s inherent; if you have black skin or ancestry, there is nothing in the world that you can do that that can make you white. There is nothing that you can do about it. That’s factual. That’s genetics. Historically, there are some of us who have struggled with that. Don’t lose sleep over whether your perception is that your brother, cousin, neighbor, friend is acting white. It’s all relative and it doesn’t matter, because blackness is what everybody sees and it’s undeniable. The question is, what is it that each one of us is doing that determines what acting black is. Does being black mean that we are slovenly, lazy, inconsiderate, rude, self-loathing consumerist or does it mean that we are industrious, caring, entrepreneurial, intelligent proud people? Embrace your American blackness.

The problem wasn’t and isn’t integration. The problem is that black people were taught to hate each other from the time we hit the ground of this country and in some cases earlier. It all goes back to slavery. History has proven that some slaves were sold to their white captors by other blacks in Africa. Whites just used that same logic to further segregate us. They put the more attractive and docile blacks in the house and put the aggressive and less attractive ones outside. As they further raped our women, they sold the mulatto offspring to other whites who had a fancy for darker meat. We in turn started to hate the fairer-complected offspring, because they seemed to have privileges that the darker-complected would never get without “selling out”.

The failure is in the fact that we have continued to blame everyone else, but ourselves for our lack of culture, our lack of solidarity, and our lack of purpose in our own community. Yes, I agree that there are those who have totally forgotten where they came from and how they got to where they are. But, there are those who try to reach out to others to bring them to where they are, but are shunned by the very same people for being “too White” by inner city standards.

I grew up in predominantly Jewish neighborhood, but still mixed nonetheless. My role model wasn’t a white woman or man. My role models were the strong single black women who raised all the kids in my neighborhood as a community. They were also the fathers of some of those kids who wanted to be a part of their kids’ lives.

In my 39 years of life, I’ve learned that problem can’t be resolved unless we get right to the root of the problem. As any former addict will tell you, “You can’t stop your problem of addiction until you admit that you are first powerless to it, you are the main source of your problem, and it is not from someone else, but your own.” They key to us ending the problem is to stop blaming White America for our problems, but to claim them and fix them ourselves. If we feel that white teachers aren’t teaching our children the way we want them to be taught, be a parent and teach them yourself. If there is something that you don’t know, find someone in your community who does. Educate yourself, so that you can educate your own. I don’t claim to be the smartest person I know, but I don’t have a problem trying to learn more. We have failed ourselves for not taking the opportunities that can clearly found everywhere. White America knows this. The ongoing joke is that they can hide anything from us by just putting it in a book. I’ve taken my mission of educating my brothers and sisters on how money works that I know doubt have learned from a rich White man, who in turn, taught it to a young Black man, who in turn, taught it to me. The NAACP was created by a bunch of Black people. It was created by a bunch of White people and a few Blacks who wanted to see Black people get treated better in this country. There is no “quick fix” for this problem, but we can achieve our goal of fixing it when first learn, like a baby to lift our heads before we eventually learn to walk and run.

The civil rights movement was about opportunity. It wasn’t about integration. I take issue with anyone who would speak unfavorably about King, Malcolm X and Justice Marshall, as if they were in part responsible for our problems today. Were these people (commentors) not listening to their mothers, fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers when they spoke about the days of Jim Crow? I don’t remember many conversations that included talk about the “good ole days”. The fact is the good ole days were few. Their stories about Jim Crow were somewhat like the ones that some whites tell their kids about the depression: you know the ones where they had to walk several miles barefoot in the snow, uphill both ways, etc. Jim Crow era stories, which coincide with and include the depression era, included the fact that grandpa had to walk several miles in the same snow, barefoot, with tattered clothes, perhaps alongside the white kids even (or the white kids were bussed), past the white school, and then walk another five miles to the inferior, poorly maintained, separate but unequal school for blacks. Now, did the black teachers there care? I bet that they did. Were they as effective as their counterparts at the white school? Probably not, due to the circ**stances that they worked under. That, my friends, was what the civil rights movement was about–opportunity.

Get the story right, and don’t villify our strong, black American heros.

Who says we have to act white? It is the parents’ responsibility to instill pride in your culture/heritage in your children at home while teaching them how to excell in life while living in the society at present. Education begins and continues at home. The value of the parents and in many cases extended family, is reflected in a child. School is only 8 hours a day and 5 days a week and less than half of the year. What are you doing in your families for the remainder of the time? Are you reading to them? Are you having dinner at home? Are you investing in their spiritual, emotional, and physical well being? Anyway…for every rags to riches success story coming out the black community, there is a strong and solid familial foundation involved somewhere. Even if it’s not within the immediate family.

The question here is ‘do you get a good education if you’re poor, stuck in the hood, going to hood school (in the past vs today)?’. There are too many levels of why black school systems fail. The most important part, if many blacks had the money/opportunity, then, like they have now, there would be no difference in the educational system in the hood, now vs then. Better education is where more dollars are, point blank! You wouldn’t be blaming white people if more blacks had money then, but we do NOW, so why make up excuses and point it back to whites?

To MsPinkDiamond’s point, blacks aren’t even taking care of their kids, ensuring they’ll have good parents, good hoods, or ensuring they’ll have food on the table, today, so how the hell can you talk about them investing in their childrens’ educations, considering the mountain of adversities black families face, many stuck in poverty? Back in the days, the problems weren’t THIS heavy, as they are today, you can’t say that if there was no integration, that we’d be better off. We have more money now, if we could have done better, as a whole, in our own communities, we would have done better! So that brings me to this question, if integration didn’t happen, would the HOOD be a good thing, or bad thing, at this point in our black experience? School desegregation has zero to do with your hood destroying your hopes, and itself! The violence and terrorism, in the hood, is greater now than it ever was, can you blame that on desegregation? NO! Blame black people for that, who tag up their own walls and piss in their hallways, when they have to live there, and try to hurt each other all day. These same kids have to go to school and possibly face violence, go home and possibly face violence, be poor, can’t afford tutors, etc… WTF do white people have to do with that? So it’s black people ruining everything they touch, that is to blame for schools in the hoods not being better than they are, by now. We have the goddamn money, WE just don’t reach back and build private schools, with donations, like we should, when we leave the hood. Instead, we build schools in Africa, for who? For poor people who WILL actually be thankful for the education you provided them, thus your contributions are well worth making, because they’ll make the most of that education that they possibly can!!!!!! What’s the reason for investing in OTHER black people in other countries, and not the hood? N1GGERS, of America, that’s the common problem. N1ggers of America can’t be helped, because they won’t help themselves. You can’t have ANYTHING of worth around n1ggers! They will ruin it, so you have to leave them behind, if you get anything of worth holding onto.

Really, socioeconomic status is the focus, not ‘trying to act white’ by going to white schools and learning alongside white people. You could go to a poor white school, and get a bum education too, as many people did. Imitating whites, or whatever the author is claiming, is not to blame. If you don’t live in an area that has crap school, you just DON’T go the a terrible school, in the hood. If you did, you’re likely to be doomed, but if you have to not only go to school there, but live there, you’re FUKED! THAT is the problem, that should be the focus, not integration. You could live in an upper-middleclass black neighborhood, not a white neighborhood, today, which you didn’t have back in the days, and get a good education at nearby schools. Where the money is, that’s where the good resources are.

The environment where the poor schools are, are not going to get good books/materials, nor teachers. Teachers want to get paid for their ‘jobs’, these guys are not genuinely interested in making sure that the race ‘makes it’. That has changed since back in the days too. So school integration doesn’t mean shiite, it’s about your socioeconomic status, again, you’re poor, you want to be rich, you don’t become a teacher, you become a CEO. Less black teachers now that more career paths are here for blacks, today. We can be anything now, that’s what’s taken away from the number of educators we have. You ‘act white’, or make it out of the hood, you’re not going to put your kids in hood schools, and you’re certainly moving everything out of the hood to protect your investments. You know damn well you can’t be rich and still live in the hood, you stay in the hood you’re a target! So you leave for another area, one where there might happen to be whites there, and you quality of life has seemed to change, because you’re not in the hood. Well as you left the hood, so too did your money that was tied to that hood. So because you can’t be rich and still live in the hood, and invest in the hood, schools will forever be crappy there. I’d stop blaming white people and get on the cases of these n1ggers who claim to have GED’s and lie about how they got into Howard. It’s these people who misrepresent the purpose of education, to the generations after them. It’s these n1ggers who kill the basketball star hopefuls, at 1am in the morning. Yeah blame THEM, not desegregation. Blame the increase in n1ggerdom, from the past until now. If there wasn’t desegregation, we’d probably not know there was better out there, for us, as many people loyal to the hood obviously can’t figure out.

education is something you have to put your hands to to make it work. parents that participate in their childrens learning along the way have children that achieve high scores and learn more. putting in the work = top results. if they were saying the black students are receiving low scores b/c of their skin color and not their schoolwork, that’s something else. but not b/c they sit in a class w/ a white teacher! that’s bull****

and for the record, my mom and all 9 of her siblings went to school during that era of desegregation in tennessee. all loved to read, had my grandmother teaching them everyday afterschool and made all a’s and b’s. i don’t buy the “blame the white man” argument. not then and definitely not today

I’ve known some pretty dumb-azz white people who’ve attended some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the nation. Somehow, one way or another, they were able to get into high-paying jobs, as well as get business loans from the banks without any problems. I still know Black people who are just as well-educated and own businesses, too. Do you think that they had it that easy? Nope…and take a wild guess why. But, the saving grace was the fact that they were educated, more humble and had more challenges in life, which gave them a little more push to succeed or as usual, make something out of nothing (which is an exclusive skill!) The point I’m trying to make is, we live in a supposedly “integrated” society here in the US but there are still “some” impediments that keep us as Black people from receiving first-class treatment. For example, let’s talk about the tools you need to build “real” personal wealth in this country, just like the white folks do it. How many Black homeowners do you personally know that were victims of sub-prime mortgage financing by “reputable” banks?…Including those who had credit that was perhaps better than most white people? Get my drift? The concept and theory of “integration” looks and sounds nice. When it is applied in real life, quite naturally, white folks are looking out for “their” best interests, No. 1 being retaining power and No. 2 making sure that they’re at least 2 steps ahead of you. Again, I can’t emphasize it enough…there is no white person, no matter how noble and sincere their efforts are, that is going to give you a competitive, fighting chance to beat them in anything in the game of life. And, they’re definitely not going to give you any credit or acknowledgement of being smarter than them for anything, even if you did design the next generation of supercomputer science that created an entirely new industry. Somewhere, down the line, you are going to find some white person who lied, cheated or outrightly stole the ideas, the patents, the scientific notes from that Black inventor. Why? All I can say is I need to read this book to know what his arguments are because this little article explains nothing but claims to have an answer. Education is a subject that we need to focus on because it is the answer and the sooner we realize that the better will be. We need to learn our history cause we seem to be repeating it often

Intergartion did more harm to blacks than it did good. Not so much intergration, but the way blacks embrassed the whole idea and concept of intergation. Blacks thought it would be so wonderful to be with whites that blacks have negelcted themselves and communities. Blacks should have taken that opportunity to use the resources to build their own cimmunites up to the point where they were on the sme level as white folks, instead of neglecting the balck communiteis just to be welcomed into the white world. A world which still considers blacks as second class.

As far as education I agree with Kashi. I disagree with easy_one. Thats the type of ignorant bliss that will lead us holding hands singing kumbaya straight into the fire. Education and knowledge are important things. I dont have the time or lack of intelligence to rock back and forth and believe all white people are out to get me.

“All of us will not be saved.”

It’s true. Some of us should be “thinned from the herd” so to speak. This is an eye-opening statement. But is it the truth.

WHAT can be done for these individuals that are “STUCK ON STUPID IN THE PARKING LOT?” They…poorly parent, produce multiple off-spring that they cannot or will not take care of thereby having a negative AFFECT on their LIVES of these off-spring, some are career criminals and will be going UP “fool’s hill for all of their lives,” poverty IS created from poverty (and if this and MIA parent(s) are not the WORST form of “murder” for our children, then truly, I don’t know what the hell is)and are “complacent” with their lives as long as SOME form of social program helps to maintain their “life-style.”

If there was NO welfare or other social programs available, WOULD this reflect significant change in the mind-set of many of our people? Our people migrated from the south, the dust-bowl, etc. and migrated west leaving Jim Crow racism (to meet it in the north…lol!)decades ago to “pull themselves up by their boot-straps.” Many were productive, becoming successful AND creating generational wealth in the process.
Blacks DID support one another and next to the bible, education WAS the focus AND the target.

I take so much offense to this article, I went to a predominantly white school and one thing that I learned was that you earn your grades, that isn’t the case in many of the majorly Black schools, and i know this because I had friends that went to those schools. In those schools if you couldn’t earn the grade eventually you were given a pass, and this even came with a curriculum that was nowhere near the equivalent of any of the desegregated schools. i had a friend in high school who was doing homework that i had done in the fifth grade, he could and still can barely read. i know a whole family that can’t read, how can this happen. I’ll tell you how, there simply are too many people who have settled for what takes the least effort in the Black community, and typically that involves waiting on a government check instead of working and spending your time having a good time smoking weed, drinking, and making babies instead of raising, instilling knowledge, and caring for those children. I had a good momma that gave a damn where her kids were everyday and night, wanted to know who their friends parents were and where they lived, cared that we ate a healthy meal every night, made sure that we had a roof over our heads and clothes on our backs, not only cared that we did our homework but made sure that we did it right and praised us when we did well in school. I went to a majorly White school and all the kids that went there (White and black) thought that we were rich because we were always clean, always got good grades, and our mother always came to our school events and meetings. And to say that Black people who went to school with White people feel like they had to be White, that is a lie, i never felt that I had to be anything but myself. I had friends of all colors, and none caused me any problems, I am sure that it may not have been that way for some of the first students to attend desegregated schools, but as time goes on things change, old ways do die, some remain but they are not as powerful as they once were and eventually i believe that they will barely be considered. People are on here talking about how they want things to change, well here is the challenge…do something about it, don’t let people half ass raise their kids anymore step in help out, congratulate, teach, mentor, do something. It starts with all of us, of course these kids are going to think that it is impossible to be something if all they see is nothing around them. Show them something other than being a rapper, ballplayer, or drug dealer, show them how to get there, and if you can help them, do so, instead of acting as if the door locked behind you once you walked in.

There is a growing body of evidence that BLACK MALES did better in the past academically in segregated schools. This is why Historical Black Colleges produced many successful graduates. Back then if a black male did good in school he was considered smart by his peers. Today if he does well and is not an athlete he’s considered to be acting like a white boy.

The correlation is doc**ented and undeniable. The history speaks for itself.
