Company Sells Black Bobble Head Dolls: Racist?

By News One April 17, 2009 10:39 am

Yeah…. it’s funny ha ha to make fun of people because of race and if you can somehow manage to make a profit off of your racism so much the better.   I’m surprised they didn’t have a collection of Mammy salt and pepper shakers to go with the bobble heads.

Every time I hear that blacks need to get over the past because Obama is president I think of images like this.   We have not progressed if  people believe that such “toys” are acceptable.

As a sit here watching my cursor flash on the screen I cannot help but wonder if I really need to say anything else.  Does it need to be said that these dolls are hurtful?  I often get called angry, and hostile by those that seek to discipline me but what they refuse to acknowledge is the pain that comes from having to look at images like this with the knowledge that they are meant to specifically demean Blacks.  I think about my young children sleeping peacefully in their beds and know that the world that I brought them into is filled with hatred towards them, despite the fact that they are beautiful little boys.

um sometimes bp can take stuff too far to go to say things are racist when thats not the case… but these dolls are lookin real BLACK FACE-ISH. all I will say… not cool

I’m actually confused why anybody that is black would say these dolls are not offensive. Obviously you were raised by someone white or have a multi racial parents. Thats not your fault, but the problem is you don’t know the pain our ancestors went through. YOu just dont say oh well, that was years ago bcz truth be told, it was not 100 years ago, it was actually 40 so research your history. THese dolls are the image of the white people that used to paint their faces black to mock and tease black folks. I sure wish black folks were united. Now my brother on here says lets just F*up all white ppl. I say lets try and unite first and see if that works.

Yall need to watch spike lees Bamboozled. And go to youtube, and look up melvin van peoples docu “classified x” Where he talks about hollywood, and these kinds of subtle images. Stuff like this doesnt shock me, I bet if there was a doll of a white woman getting raped, it wouldnt even make production.

  • 4-17-2009 5:39 pm

Some of these dumb people on BP are going to say these aren’t racist just like that damn Popeyes commercial, like i said be smart enough to know when your being talked about

  • 4-17-2009 5:36 pm

I look at these dolls and think of Blackface play. When african americans are depicted as lazy, ignorant, oversexed, etc. All the negativity that is place on our communities. And if we can’t identity blatant racism. We are doomed cause we won’t recongize the subtle things under the radar. These dolls are hurtful.

    THAT IS NOT COOL

  • 4-17-2009 5:15 pm

when i saw these, the first word that came to mind is minstrel.

  • 4-17-2009 5:14 pm

    These dolls look like death…

  • 4-17-2009 4:43 pm

They are REALLY DARK-SKINNED! okay? they DONT have HUGE lips, They DONT have a HUGE nose they are just BLACK! And thats nuthin to be ashamed of, thats beautiful, that color is our heritage and its not offensive, the world is SO vain, everyone is saying that the doll is “ugly” no the doll is BLACK! It’s a darkskinned litte black kid! It doesnt even have nappy hair! BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL, and as soon as OUR ppl can accept and embrace it this doll will no longer be “ugly” i know u feel me. Now the names they gave the doll maybe a little off, they shouldnt have named the doll “happy black kid” just “happy kid” wouldve been cool. Get mad at the name not at the BEAUTIFUL BLACK doll.

these dolls are so reminiscent of the pickaninny images used in advertisements, film, and other media during the earlier/middle part of last century. These images and those of the pickaninny are BLATANTLY racist and prejudice. Look at how exaggerated their features are. These types of images were used to demean black children and portray them as incompetent and animalistic. This part of our American history isn’t taught to most of us unless we seek out higher education so many black people, especially those not from that era, have absolutely no clue about how damaging these types of images actually are.
