In protest of the recently passed immigration law in Arizona that many believe will lead to racial profiling, Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity has moved its annual convention out of the state. The fraternity’s leadership announced this decision through an email to members, saying:

” … the Board of Directors of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity voted unanimously to rescind the location of Phoenix, Arizona as our meeting location of the 104th Anniversary/ 90th General Convention in July, and to denounce the egregious immigration act signed recently by the governor of Arizona. It was the full opinion of the board that we could not host a meeting in a state that has sanctioned a law which we believe will lead to racial profiling and discrimination, and a law that could put the civil rights and the very dignity of our members at risk during their stay in Phoenix Arizona.”

The convention will be re-located to Las Vegas. Alpha Phi Alpha’s decision comes amid increasing calls to boycott the state of Arizona and its businesses until the controversial immigration law is overturned.

How quickly we forget it was Arizona who opposed the King Holiday! I believe that we need imigration laws but it bothers me that we are so quick to reject various levels of work as being demeaning yet we have no problem expecting them (the immegrants) to do them. The patriot act is a primary example of a law that was used to combat terrorism but it is used to violate the civil rights of Americans across the country. The problem with the immegration law in Arizona is that eventually it will switch its focus from the Mexican (who this law is targeting) to black, other Hispanics (and lets be honest most non hispanics can not distinuguish between a person from PR vs that of a person from Mexico.)

Different groups need to take a stand against any type of injustice. We cant let it affect us before we opt to take a stand then expect others to come to our aide. The reality is that eventually this unfair law will cross over into the African American community, then Asians and it wount be deemed a problem until a group of whites are stopped under this law then it will be deemed necessary to reevaluate this law as a hole.

A Phi A this Sigma man supports your desire to move your conference out of Arizona!

Alhcsh. Though the leardership of APA is against the law. Most Alphas are in support of going to LV because we are trying to protect our hispainc members from some type of profiling, which I think even you agree can and probably will happen. My son is in Tucson at UofA and agrees with you that something ha sto be done.

so everyone is trying to criticize the people of arizona for defending themselves. its good that alphas were watching out for the feelings if their latino brothers but what were they doing about the illegal immigration issue before the arizona vote…… not a damn thing. the people of arizona voted for this no one else should have anything to say about it

This is one way, maybe not the best way, but one way to try to stem the illegals from rushing across the border. I’ve been in Arizona for work and spoke to people who regularly have their homes broken into and property trashed and brutalized by people crossing the border. Most of the country agrees with this until a better method comes along instead of wishing it away. The liberal networks, ABC, NBC, CBS etc would try to have you believe otherwise.

I think this is bulls**t. What is going on in AZ is a problem and no one wants to be responsible for it. A phi A I think is taking the wrong approach on this one.

@missstrings43.. so what you’re saying is that illegal immigrants (usually not that well educated) are taking jobs away from educated Black people? Please! That has to be one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever read on here.
For the most part, illegal immigrants are doing the jobs that most of us think we are “too good” for anyway. Lawn work, cooks, cleaning people’s houses, watching people’s kids, etc.
Not to say that I’m in favor of people being in the country illegally but don’t make it out to be some travesty that’s keeping you down. Sell that ish somewhere else

Hey, everyone don’t be so hard on the Alpha’s they just want to make sure that cheap labor is there for their sweatshops. If illegals are willing to take little pay for a job, then when you want a job you have to take the same or be priced out of the market.

wow. did the site just block out the work undoc**ented bc it has c-u-m in it? smh lol O.D.

Despite what that person just said, there are plenty of “black” folks who care about other non-white people being discriminated against in this country. If one is hated, all are hated. Apartheid for one is just as bad as Apartheid for any. Any black person who has ever been looked at strangely in any space or elevator, had a purse clutched around them, been racially profiled by cops or anything of the like can understand. Some of us are in solidarity. This crap aint right. Kudos to A-Phi-A for taking somewhat of a stand. More of us should. Don’t worry about anybody saying black folk dont care about —–. Bc they’re the same ppl who in actuality dont care abt black folk themselves, either. Black ppl ought to b careful abt spitting out that type of hatred. That’s why we stand alone and even worse, stand divided, and nobody else will stand with us.

I however, do not like the idea that people who are not legal citizens get to stay here. This just isnt the way to fix it. There’s a whole plethora of problems here including our immigration system and policies which needs a complete overhaul and has for decades. the way things are is unfair to everyone involved, the the undoc**ented worker, the legal immigrants, and the native born americans. However. This law is totally unfair. period, the end. It is a human rights violation, although it by extension is in accordance with federal law in so far as it is intended to bring legal action against people who break the law (live in the country illegally). but this is just some straight Apartheid sh*t. We’ve got to do better, people.

luvleelatina1 this is not a black persons problem it is your issue so you deal with it.We do not care about what goes on in az if your illegal then you have no right that americans do.Black people been in american for hundreds of years so if they pull over a black person it’s not because of them thinking there from another country lol.Black folks do not care about what goes on with other races of people fact.

I’m all for the law, as long as they card everyone regardless of ethnicity. Once again, if you get here on a visa and it expires and you stay, you’re an illegal immigrantly.

Plus most of the “illegals” that are targeted with this law usually don’t have a college education or even a high school one. So I truly doubt that they’re taking jobs from colleged educated people, unless it was entry level positions and the organization is just looking for the lowest wages to keep.

And one more thing, this is not racial profiling as much as the hispanic community want to beat into our heads.

What is racial about hispanic getting and taking away all of the jobs from educated blacks in Phoenix, Az. I have worked jobs here where we were all removed and the hispanic were allowed to stay. And the blacks had degrees and very very strong work ethics.
If you have not lived in Phoenix and experienced it, you really are trusting the wrong entity.

I usually do not post three times in one post but I am mad as HELLLL!!!!!

Sad that Alpha Phi Alpha is relocating not only from Phoenix but now to Sin City.

Can they have chosen a worse city to do anything productive in?
Vegas is full of gambling, sex and sin.

    What on earth????

I actually live in Phoenix, Arizona and strongly support the new immigration law here. I have been subjected to two attacks by illegal immigrants in my own home and I am fed up with them living here. They get away with everything. And I mean everything.
There needed to be a way to stop it!
    Bless God!
    Finally!
The hype is that the majority here are illegals.

    I agree with Nefertini313:

I bet you a Mexican fraternity would not have altered their plans in support of an African American initiative. Illegal Immigration Is A Crime. If you are NOT in this country legally, GET TO STEPPING!
    Glory Be to God!
    Finally!

Actually one of the other reasons the fraternity cancelled the convention is that even though Alpha Phi Alpha is the first Black Fraternity. It is not 100% black. There are Hispanic, Asian, and white Alpha brothers. The Alphas did not feel that any of their latin members should feel uncomfortable coming to the convention. nAlpha Phi Alpha made a decision to allow other ethnic people into their fraternity back in the 1940’s.

actually it is their concern, any1 whos more than tan will be targeted, and and i commend this frat for being brave enough to take this stand, i just wanna say THANK YOU on behalf of my latin ppl

If you want to make a REAL impact against the stance of racial profiling in any state..pulled the money they expect.. cancel conventions..and anything else that will bring revenue into that state, in this case its(AZ)..even if it does require a paid penalty cancellation fee..its worth it..

..as I understand Texas is considering to follow AZ..

I’m for immigration reform..but racial profilong is not the way..

Hispanics need to understand the african american community will support them -against this racist law implemented by AZ..we’ve experienced the same for hundreths of years and have prevailed against the PALE ONE racist laws.

The african american community are consumers to be reckon with..if you want change..go against the opposition’s pocket book.. and don’t spend the money in a state that out-right practices racism lawfully. I had a business trip planned later this year to AZ..WON’t be going..they will not GET a dime from me.
