From the Economic Policy Institute:

Fifteen months into a deep recession, college-educated white workers still had a relatively low unemployment rate of 3.8% in March of this year. The same could not be said for African Americans with four-year degrees. The March 2009 unemployment rate for college-educated blacks was 7.2%—almost twice as high as the white rate—and up 4.5 percentage points from March 2007, before the start of the current recession (see chart). Hispanics and Asian Americans with college degrees were in between, both with March 2009 unemployment rates of 5%.

It was a long time before I found a job after graduation.

All I can say is get a corporate temp job and go from there. if you don’t do that, you will be SOL for a long time.

thanks for shedding light on this situation… i have a master’s degree and i’ve been affected… so no one is really exempt… i realized this when many of my black college educated friends started reporting that they had been laid off or unable to find a job… what are the next steps regarding this issue as far as policy directions?… i wonder…

I’ve actually been networking and attempting to assist some friends. I’ve honestly found myself shaking my head on numerous occassions due to friends waving that degree and feeling “too important” to lower their salaries briefly? Isn’t it smarter to be employed…and have money coming in while waiting out this mess? You’d be surprised at how many think they are above a salary cut and are losing their homes and vehicles due to pride and over inflated egos.

I don’t blame this on anybody more than likely they was unqualified for the job…Probably got in school as a quota same as getting a job over somebody else that was qualified

Someone slap VanityBonet back to reality! “Probably got in school as a quota same as getting a job over somebody else that was qualified” Yeah and you are probably dumb enough to believe that and that racism is dead and gone because Obama is in the White House. So if I get what you are saying, you believe every sucessful blackmen/women got there to fulfill some kinda quota or over a more qualified individual?? What did one of your white friends who was more then likely unqualified for a job and did not get it because a blackman/woman got it that was actually qualified for the job got it? But hey he/she are black so of course they can not be qualified for such a job right Vanity?? Actually it is funny that there was a need for such a system in the first place, but hey I will not blame anyone either for needing such a system.

Wow, this “study” is flawed. It doesn’t consider the degree type. Traditionally, African-Americans gravitate towards degrees that are both less employable and lucrative, e.g. English Literature over Chemistry and Biology. It’s about the SCIENCES. Yes, race must be factored in, but it is neither the main or sole reason.

I just gradauted last August thinking my prospects would improve since I was coming out of finance that took an obvious dive. Still looking for a gig, but decided recently it was time to just start hustlin’. I’m getting my other broke folks together to acquire some real estate while its cheap to rent out. I suggest ya’ll do the same because its known blacks are the last hired and first fired. Create your own job…

@ Sigil_ Degree choice is not major a factor in this study. But to use your example there are plenty of whites with English degrees and less Americans in general who choose to major in the sciences. I believe one’s degree choice is a small factor in how ” lucrative” or “employable” they may be. The biggest factor is the person that stands behind the degree, experience and the opportunities within their reach.

That’s right, a science or engineering degree from Princeton or Yale is as worthless as the paper it’s printed on if the person holding it looks “black.”

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_G6FUWU5S3YJUH7TBWIAKEOWSGA Pam

Like I mentioned earlier, even a science or engineering or law degree is not worth the paper it’s printed on if the person holding it looks “black.” And if the person holding it were Hispanic or looked Hispanic it would only be of any value in the Hispanic AREAS.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_G6FUWU5S3YJUH7TBWIAKEOWSGA Pam

And since when is Biology an employable science anyway? I have a biology degree but I look “black” and that’s all she wrote when they see me.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_G6FUWU5S3YJUH7TBWIAKEOWSGA Pam

Unfortunately you’re right. That IS what people think! Thanks to Obama being president we now have a huge backlash against blacks getting educated in anything but the lowly “black” schools in the “black” areas of the deep South. I’ve actually been told “oh Harvard takes anyone these days.” In Boston, no less. People are nastier and more racist over the internet than they usually would be in person; but these days I am hearing in person the same degree of nastiness and racism that you see all over the internet whenever you google “black educated can’t get jobs anywhere” and anything even remotely relevant comes up.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_G6FUWU5S3YJUH7TBWIAKEOWSGA Pam

What a bloody RACIST this person is!!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_G6FUWU5S3YJUH7TBWIAKEOWSGA Pam

No, the complaint is not that the jobs don’t pay enough. It’s that they can’t get anything AT ALL. Why is that so hard for supposedly computer-literate people to comprehend!?!? Nothing. Crickets. You’re sending out resumes or doing online applications or God forbid wasting gas and time going all over town getting paper applications and turning them in, and hearing NOTHING. You’re wondering if your phone has stopped working, or if they’re just chucking the application once you’ve left the room because they saw the color of your skin. THAT’S what people mean these days, not that the job offers they’re getting aren’t “enough.”
