New York City will close its first jail on Rikers Island this summer as part of a 10-year plan to shut down the infamous and violence-plagued jail complex.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Friday that the dilapidated and notorious Rikers Island jail complex will close, with the process taking up to 10 years.
Venida Browder, the 63-year-old the mother of the late Kalief Browder, who committed suicide after spending three horrific years being abused on Rikers Island, died of complications of a heart attack, or as her lawyer noted, "of a broken heart."
