Today is Martin Luther King’s birthday. Today a horrific tragedy is going on in Haiti. While some men of the cloth are using the incident to spread their twisted world views, Martin surely would’ve used the occasion to spread wisdom and good will and encourage his fellow man to help out our Haitian brothers and sisters in need. But still what happened in Haiti is deeper than that.

For King, giving money to Haiti would not be enough. In order to be good citizens of the world, it is not good enough to just to give money, we must make sure to end the economic and social climate that led to the disaster. Here’s an excerpt from his speech “Beyond Vietnam.”

A true revolution of values will soon cause us to question the fairness and justice of many of our past and present policies. On the one hand we are called to play the good Samaritan on life’s roadside; but that will be only an initial act. One day we must come to see that the whole Jericho road must be transformed so that men and women will not be constantly beaten and robbed as they make their journey on life’s highway. True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring. A true revolution of values will soon look uneasily on the glaring contrast of poverty and wealth.

King goes on, addressing America’s foreign policy and how it is destructive to the Third World.

With righteous indignation, it will look across the seas and see individual capitalists of the West investing huge sums of money in Asia, Africa and South America, only to take the profits out with no concern for the social betterment of the countries, and say: “This is not just.” It will look at our alliance with the landed gentry of Latin America and say: “This is not just.” The Western arrogance of feeling that it has everything to teach others and nothing to learn from them is not just.

King also condemns countries that spend more money on wars than social program. The USA has pledged $100 million in aid to Haiti, while pledging upwards of $30 billion to add 30,000 troops in Afghanistan.

A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death. America, the richest and most powerful nation in the world, can well lead the way in this revolution of values. There is nothing, except a tragic death wish, to prevent us from reordering our priorities, so that the pursuit of peace will take precedence over the pursuit of war. There is nothing to keep us from molding a recalcitrant status quo with bruised hands until we have fashioned it into a brotherhood.

So on Martin Luther King’s birthday, let us reflect on our fellow human beings in Haiti. Let us help them out with our donations, but also let’s fight so third world people do not have to suffer through the poverty that has inflamed this natural disaster. Let us be reminded of how what goes on in our own country affects the rest of the world.

PLEASE! What would MLK say about this current 3 Generations of Human Destroyers of Lives a/k/a the Gangbangers, Thugs, Criminals & other Menances who are snuffing out more of their OWN race/people than the KKK ever dared to do! Not ONLY is it happening, a lot of it is being taped by Other Destroyers of Lives to be put on the Internet/U-Tube so people of their mentality can feel great, just dammed good about themselves, having hurt, harmed and/or snuffed out other people of their own race! What happened in Haiti was a natural ACT of nature! What these destroyers who walk’s on 2-legs are out & about doing is NOT AN ACT OF NATURE! It’s individuals who happen to be African American (Visually ONLY) who are LOWER than the KKK ever dared to get!!! The Earth Needs to Open Up and Swallow ALL their A**’s! Building’s need to fall on top of All their A**’s!!!

Actually, I think he would be proud. i think the first to arrive on the scene was the Chinese… which i thought was crazy since we can see Haiti from the tip of Florida…but anyway..to see all the worlds culture coming together to help Haiti out would have made him tear!!!

I agree w/ you Toni_Anthony, we should be part of the solution not problem in our society theres enough hate & destruction in the name of mankind (combine), worse than any natural disaster can do. Instead of talking about love for the ppl, its time for action w/ compassion. Dr. King Jr. wouldn’t be the one who rally up hate & division amongst ourselves & toward anyone, he didn’t promote or advocate hate or violence as the remedy nor to commpromise w/ his integrity. Leaders as MLK set a standard for us to change our mindset to be a peaceful example in our homes, community, in order to change the world of malicious intents from these hateful hearts who are committed to seek & destroy anything good that is left. Time is wasted on criticism of whos not doing right, but ask ourselves what are we going to do to make a change for the better of the next generation to follow?

Dr. King jr, would say about Haiti (IMO):

Instead of complaining about some insensitive fools talking about Haiti’s crisis w/ countless of human sufferings, we should shift our energy & time to do our part to rescue our brothers/sisters in dire need, whether we skip our daily starbuck coffees, sell some of our designer collection, make a bakesale or whatever !!!! to help send $ for Haiti ppl, they’re gonna need our support in the long haul, w/ our best ability & effort to be a HERO. It doesn’t do jack to point fingers at whos most righteous, but lift a finger to help & serve each other. (lifting my prayers to the survivors, their families, children to restore spirit, homes, community…. for the love of Haiti)

MLK would be devasted that he got killed got this?!?!
What? Gangs as a choice, jail as a choice, unwed people parenting as a choice, people choosing not to parent their kids once they get them here,
people chosing not to go to school and people encouraging their kids to not respect each other, teachers, authority or wanting to get educated and I am taking like 3rd graders here.

Our country needs help. People need tohelp themselves and make the right choices.

MLK would be proud of Michelle Robinson Obama. her brother. Pres. Obama. Black legit politicans, let me say LEGIT.
He would be happy baout people,White,Black, whatever, who are living right.

He would most happy about how C.S.King raised their children. He knew was an ideal wife and mother and that’s what he was looking for in a life partner, even if theirs as a couple was sort. He would happy that his children found their way and did their thing and are happy and living right.

He would probably say nothing, but stare at Abernathly, Jesse Jackoson. That would be enough.
Total trash ,greed and gleefully trashed him and other like Jesse who love to divide people.

I can go on and on.

You get my point about what I think he would say.
