President Obama publicly spoke for the first time about the Anthony Weiner cyber-sex scandal, saying that “if it was me, I would resign.”

“When you get to the point where, because of various personal distractions, you can’t serve as effectively as you need to at the time when people are worrying about jobs and their mortgages and paying the bills, then you should probably step back,” Obama said in a “Today” show interview set to air today.

House Democrats have threatened to strip Weiner of his Energy and Commerce Committee appointment, and also have him kicked out of the party caucus.

Weiner was granted two week leave of absence yesterday.
