Aaron Flagg, a jazz trumpeter who has played with Wynton Marsalis and recorded with Roberta Flack, has been named the first black dean of The Hartt School in Connecticut.
The 39-year-old Flagg will start his new job on June 30 at the music school, part of the University of Hartford. He is currently executive director of the Music Conservatory of Westchester in White Plains, N.Y.
Flagg says he’s honored to lead a school with a tradition of excellence. He is taking over for Malcolm Morrison, who stepped down in December to go back to teaching at the 89-year-old school.
Hartt alumni include singer Dionne Warwick and television producer Kent McCray, who worked with actor Michael Landon on “Little House on the Prairie.”
