MILLERS CREEK, N.C. — Authorities say a bomb squad disposed of a gasoline can at an intersection where President Barack Obama’s motorcade passed in northwest North Carolina.

WXII-TV reports that Wilkes County sheriff’s deputies said officers noticed the can on Monday and were told that it had been there for several days.

The discovery prompted a call to the Winston-Salem bomb squad. It disposed of the can filled with gasoline that posed little danger.

Deputies weren’t immediately available for further comment.

Obama spoke to a crowd at West Wilkes High School as part of his tour through North Carolina and Virginia to promote his jobs bill. The gasoline can was found about a mile from the school.
