The death of Samuel DuBose by the hands of former University of Cincinnati officer Ray Tensing revealed some disturbing numbers about their traffic stops off campus.
According to Fox 15, University of Cincinnati police force off-campus patrols have been terminated. The Law and Public Safety Committee approved the ordinance as stops dating back to Jan. 1, 2013 were reviewed. In that year, the city approved the UC police to enforce traffic stops off campus.
Records revealed that their numbers nearly tripled with white stops doubling from 579 in 2013 to 932 and black stops quadrupling from 633 in 2013 to 2,354 this year alone. Officials are staying away from the racial profiling label until the investigation is complete. In what council members call a limited area, the numbers surprised many during the Law and Public Safety Committee meeting on Monday.
Councilwoman Yvette Simpson told reporters:
“That’s astounding. You don’t want to make accusations, but it’s like—there’s disparate impact and then there’s profiling,” Simpson said. “That’s a huge number.”
Cincinnati Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell admitted the numbers were disturbing. He decided to investigate the force after Tensing was charged with the murder of DuBose. The father of 13 was shot in the head during a traffic stop in July.
“I was a little bit concerned—I can’t lie—I’m a little bit concerned about the numbers and the discrepancy in the culture and race of the drivers that are stopped,” he said. “I think we have to look at that to see if there’s anything there.”
University of Cincinnati Police Chief Jason Goodrich has stayed quiet since Tensing was indicted on the charges and the current investigation on the force began.
Tensing posted bond last week and plead not guilty to the charges. He also filed a grievance through a union representative demanding his job back.
