A trial date has been set for Ray Tensing, the former University of Cincinnati police officer who shot Samuel DuBose during a traffic stop in July.

A Hamilton County Common Pleas Court judge scheduled the trial date for Nov. 16. Tensing, 25, is facing time in prison under charges of murder and voluntary manslaughter for shooting DuBose, 43, in the head after pulling him over for a missing front license plate.

Tensing wasn’t in court to hear the order, according to CBS News, but his attorney was present and says he plans to have the case moved to another county. The former officer previously pleaded not guilty to the charges and filed a grievance against the university for terminating him without warning or a pre-disciplinary conference.

The same day, the University of Cincinnati Police Department resumed activity on campus in time for fall semester. Cincinnati Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell said the timing might be open to criticism, but with 44,000 students returning for classes, he wants to provide a safe and patrolled environment.

MSNBC reports:

“It might be too early. Candidly, it might be,” said Cincinnati Police Chief Jeffery Blackwell. “But we have a responsibility to the parents of those 44,000 young people getting an education at UC. We have a responsibility to the UC community to make things as safe as possible.”

Mark O’Mara, the attorney representing the DuBose family, said the university pointed the finger at the surrounding community of Cincinnati as a problem for students. He challenged their statements:

“I think they’re rushing to get their police officers back on the street so they can say students are safe when the problem is the community around the university seemingly is not safe,” says attorney Mark O’Mara, who represents members of the DuBose family. “UCPD has a long way to go to prove themselves to the community.”

Stay tuned for more information about Tensing’s trial as it becomes available.
