Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, who dubbed himself “the people’s sheriff,” opened his speech at the Republican Nation Convention last night to rousing applause and the following words: “Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to make something very clear: Blue lives matter in America.”

He didn’t stop there. The latest acquittal of Lt. Brian Rice in the death of Freddie Gray on Monday stirred the nation, and many wonder what will transpire as three more officers are scheduled to face trial in an already polarizing case.

“There is some good news out of Baltimore, Maryland as LT. Brian Rice was acquitted on all charges,” Clarke said, again to roaring applause. He continued, calling the prosecution “malicious,” while also calling Baltimore’s State Attorney, Marilyn Mosby, an “activist.”

How unfortunate that the GOP uses this rhetoric to further divide our deeply troubled nation. To applaud Rice’s acquittal is nothing less than horrific, especially under the context of the recent shooting deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. The iron is too hot to strike.

Does it not occur to him that Black lives in America are facing an ever-increasing crisis? Let’s be clear: you can be a conservative of color without vehemently denying your truth.

Clarke is obviously pandering to the “people” of the GOP base, and what better way to align yourself than at the RNC convention?
