Whether you’ve been on the giving or receiving end of this statement, you should know that it is entirely too common. What might be intended as a simple flirtatious comment can be received as predatory, disrespectful, and straight up dangerous.

Inspired by the guerilla street activism campaign of protagonist Nola Darling on the Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It, several Black women have come forward with their own individual stories of street harassment using the “My Name Isn’t” meme generator. Among the participants are She’s Gotta Have It star DeWanda Wise, NewsOne‘s SVP Kierna Mayo, and writer Michaela Angela Davis.
