Sadly, news broke today that two Baton Rouge officers will not be charged in the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling, according to The New York Times. Sterling was shot and killed on July 5, 2016 after police were called to a convenient store to investigate reports that a Black man in a red shirt threatened customers. Once the officers arrived, a confrontation ensued and Sterling was fatally shot. He was 37 years old.
Officers Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake II, the men responsible for his death, once again proves the system refuses to convict cops for shooting Black men and boys. Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry said on Tuesday morning, the cops acted in a “reasonable and justifiable manner.”
People are rightfully outraged, including Alton Sterling’s aunt, Veda Washington-Abusaleh. She said outside of the courthouse, “He was murdered by two white racist police officers. He was murdered like an animal…And the [Louisiana Attorney General] said they didn’t see the police officers do anything wrong. I told them to ‘kiss my ass!'” Watch below:
The decision, although expected, is a serious blow after the killing of 22-year-old Stephon Clark, an unarmed man who was fatally gunned down by police in Sacramento, California.
Rest in power, Alton Sterling.
