The Proud Boys are an organization of racist white men who have been known for violent acts across the country. The Southern Law Poverty Center has called them a hate and extremist group. On October 12, there was a violent brawl outside of the Metropolitan Republican Club, where Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes was scheduled to speak. The racists clashed with protesters and a violent brawl ensued. Six days later, one Proud Boy was arrested.
NBC News reports, Geoffrey Young, 38, of New City, was arrested. He faces charges of rioting and attempted assault. In the surveillance video below, Young is reportedly the one wearing a polo shirt with a yellow-striped collar.
The NYPD already arrested three of the masked protesters, who were reportedly members of the anti-fascist group Antifa, but as the Daily Beast reports, they were actually anti-racism protesters, “The three men—Finbarr Slonim, 20; Kai Russo, 20; and Caleb Perkins, 35—were each charged with assault, harassment, and petit larceny. Perkins was also charged with resisting arrest. All were arraigned Saturday in Manhattan Criminal Court and released on their own recognizance.” There was criticism of the NYPD for arresting the anti-racist protesters but not a member of the Proud Boys.
The Proud Boys, which was allegedly founded in 2016 as a “fraternal organization” for young “Western chauvinist” men, has been known for violence. For example, when 18-year-old Nia Wilson was killed in Oakland, California on July 22, there was a vigil just days after and a man, who was reportedly a member of the Proud Boys, tried to disrupt the vigil. He was quickly shut down by the crowd, see below:
