John Hope Franklin passed away last month at the age of 94.

Viewed solely through the lens of African-American achievement, Franklin was the Jackie Robinson of academia — the first African-American to chair a history department at a mainstream American university.

But that’s an almost glib way to classify a man who was one of America’s great historians, period. Franklin was more than that, too: a successful author, a Civil Rights activist, a reparations advocate, and a mentor and inspiration to countless intellectuals from Henry Louis Gates, Jr. to NewsOne’s own Mark Anthony Neal.
