With this relatively positive story following this week’s lull in news about Gov. Paterson, the momentum that initially looked as if it would sweep him toward resignation on a tide of corruption accusations appears to have slowed. Investigators have found little direct evidence that Gov. Paterson tampered with a witness in a domestic abuse case against one of his top aides, the Daily News has learned.

While several key people have yet to be interviewed, the woman at the heart of the case, Sherr-una Booker, told probers she didn’t feel the governor threatened her in a phone conversation a day before a Feb. 8 hearing in the case.

Sources also say conversations that several of the governor’s aides had with Booker before the court date were too vague to nail down a witness tampering case. “It’s a very difficult witness tampering case to make against Paterson,” one source said. “But the investigation is not over.”
