Atlanta is in the midst of what is being referred to as one of the worst traffic jams in history. Beginning on Tuesday, the traffic jam is reportedly still going on 16 hours later, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The traffic nightmare started after it snowed and the weather caused road snarls all across the bustling city. One unidentified woman even gave birth to a baby girl in her car while stuck in traffic.

The 1 to 2 inches of snow has literally paralyzed the city.

Even though Atlanta’s mayor, Kasim Reed, advised residents to stay off the icy roads, there are hundreds of vehicle accidents. School buses have also been suspended and countless children have had to spend the night at their schools because their parents simply could not reach them.

As folks continue to deal with the unimaginable icy road mess, many have walked away from their vehicles to take refuge at local retailers. Folks are sleeping in the aisles of such retailers as CVS drugs store and Publix supermarket. A Whole Foods supermarket even stayed open all night to accommodate weary commuters.

Makeshift shelters have been set up at churches and firehouses as well to provide warmth for the thousands of stranded commuters, and those who can walk to work are doing so.

Police and the national guard are trying to rescue people from their cars who need assistance, individuals with medical issues, the elderly, and infants and children.

Watch news coverage on the effect the snow is having on the South:

On Wednesday at a downtown connector, food and drinks were being handed out by Matthew Miller who told the AJC that when he read on Facebook that folks had been stranded for as long as 18 hours, he decided to hand out free peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, cereal, and hot chocolate.

“I saw on Facebook that people had been out here for 18 hours and were complaining of being hungry and thirsty and just thought I would try to help out any way I could,” Miller said.

Meanwhile, as to when road conditions are expected to improve, transportation officials don’t have a clue.
