Tragedy struck on Friday in Texas, when a mother was shot and killed by police after fatally shooting her two daughters.

Christy Sheats, 42, shot her daughters Taylor, 22, and Madison, 17, on Friday in Fulshear, west of Houston, the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office told CNN. Jason Sheats, the father and husband, also suffered gun wounds. He is recovering at a local hospital, investigators say.

After arriving at the Sheats’ home, the responding officer shot the mother when she refused to put down her weapon. According to reports, the two girls were already wounded by the time officers arrived. Taylor died at the scene, while Madison succumbed at a neighboring hospital.

Police are still investigating the chain of events, which they believe began in the house and spilled outside. They claim Jason Sheats was home at the time the shooting began and ran to a neighbor’s house to call for help. Investigators confirmed they have visited the Sheats’ home before, but would not disclose details.

CBS News reports Sheats was a gun advocate and spoke about protecting her gun rights on her social media page.

Neighbors and friends of the Sheats seem shocked that such a tragedy occurred within the family.

“It’s crazy. The neighborhood has never seen this kind of thing before.” Austin Enke, a neighbor and schoolmate of one of the victims, said. “It’s always quiet. This is surprising. They never showed any kind of thing that was wrong with them whatsoever.”
