If we presume he had no idea of the racial undertones of this image, then how do we explain his forwarding the image? Would he have forwarded this on if the lawn were full of bowling balls? Tomatoes? If watermelons were just another fruit to him, the picture should have seemed absurd and he probably would have deleted it. But he forwarded it because there was something he thought worth circulating, for whatever reason, and now he’s pleading ignorance.

My concern is that people will try to ignore the fact that racism is still in effect. Although we have Obama in office, that doesn’t mean that things have changed ’360. I have never ever got how black people and watermelon get associated with each other. When either of grandparents had cookouts they never had it. My first watermelon I ever had was on a church camp trip and the church I was attending was roughly 60% white.

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. – The mayor of a small Southern California city says he will resign after being criticized for sharing an e-mail picture depicting the White House lawn planted with watermelons under the title “No Easter egg hunt this year.”

Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose issued a statement Thursday saying he is sorry and will step down as mayor at Monday’s City Council meeting.

Grose came under fire for sending the picture to what he called “a small group of friends.” One of the recipients, a local businesswoman and city volunteer, publicly scolded the mayor for his actions.

Grose says he accepts that the e-mail was in poor taste and has affected his ability to lead the city.

Located in Orange County, Los Alamitos is a city of around 12,000 people.

I don’t see what the problem is with this picture. I received a text message with a truck full of black people, hip-hop music being played loudly, and a message saying that President Bush’s moving party to help him move out. I think that instead of criticizing the ethnicity of our president, we should be praying for his safety and for his family.

I’m sorry, it’s really very simple. People (not just Black people, but American people) do have the right to be offended by the picture. And the reason I say it’s simple is because we all know George Bush would never have gotten this email because giving it to him wouldn’t have made any sense. Obviously the email was sent with steretypical thoughts in mind. But that doesn’t mean I’m allowing White people to upset my life. What I’m doing is acknowledging tha race relations are not at the dream levels we thought they would automatically go to with the inauguration of President Obama.
No, there is no way to get the whole country to agree to change their way of thinking and just accept President Obama as leader of the free world and let it go. But unfortunately, when that California mayor took his oath of office, he was agreeing (and yes, it was implied by taking the oath) that he would represent his city and state to the best of his ability while carrying out his duties. Encouraging racially based stereotypes is not one of his duties. It was inappropriate, regardless of who sent it, but it was especially offensive for someone of such stature (by title, I’ve actually never heard of him… the mayor in question, I mean) to send such an email, and then to be as bold as to send it directly TO the President?
