blackmaleteacher

From Todays Drum:

He’s the head of education for the entire United States and he’s calling all black men to the front– of the classroom– that is.

This fall, Education Secretary Arne Duncan plans on touring historically black colleges and universities in hopes of increasing the number of black men teaching in America’s public schools– which is currently less than 2 percent.

Is placing black men in the classroom the answer to solving some of the problems in the black community such as gang violence, high school drop out rates, and fatherless homes? Secretary Duncan thinks so. Do you agree, or disagree?

If you’re teaching foolishness like 3 blind mice, and cows jumping over the moon, what difference does it make the color of the teacher? Yes we do need black teachers but more importantly we need a complete overhaul of the curriculum complete with comprehensive black studies that predate slavery. What’s the use, 3/4 of you negroes don’t even think this is necessary.

my thing is, how are u gonna increase college enrollment by going to the colleges? if theyre serious about proportional wealth distribution (which theyre not), they need to reform all highschools and start college prep freshman year. im not even gonna bring up the texas text book situation, but you cant tell a sophmore with an ipod, ipad, xbox live, lap top, desk top, and google phone to go open a book with lies in it. we need to evolve our public scholl system if we’re going to compete with the habib muhammads, tim gongs, and mary nguyens (legal aliens) of the work force.

we do need more black male teachers in all levels of our schools. Not just high school, but elemntary school as well. We have too many black youthhs, especially boys, that are raised up in a single mothers home. This may be the only male role model he may see at a young age. OUr kids needs to see more educated black males in the school system. This will help paint a picture for them to become successful.

Nuff said…It’s quite the challenge to send my girls to school then DEPROGRAM them when the day is done…Parents today aren’t willing and sadly they aren’t able to do so, to combat the lies told in school..

only to a extent, jobs are always good, many youths are expose to many quick rush of short live happy route to get everything fast b/c its popular in their communities and that’ll make them not learn to grow their own,but only teaches them greed to get alot and that’s like barbarian with spoils thinking they have power to do whatever and look down on men = minniature wars (babies thinking their being a man).venturing out is always good and guess who don’t want that, the population control plot, put few in factories take their genius ideas and let the rest self distruct.young ones taking challenges through out journeys makes one grows knowledge step by step, and that’ll make them respect the young ones who don’t have anything.we don’t evolve we adapt, everything you see around you are also mathematics=days night seasons gums then teeth.lol lol

In order to have more black male teachers we need more black college graduates; currently only about 10% of black males have a 4 year degree or higher. So crack those books my niggas!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CaliFemme23/ CaliFemme23

Why do MOST black people think college is the end all be all? By the time a black person gets through college they don’t have anymore reticent knowledge than they had in high school, they are FULL of debt, don’t know who the hell they are because white people have been teaching them their entire life as well as black teachers spouting white people rhetoric, (which serves to confuse the hell outta you when you fck around and learn some REAL SHlT!), and that piece of paper that gets 70% of college grads a nice comfy job TAKING YOUR ORDER…

We need to promote knowledge to our children, because that and college are two different things…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/YourDaddy123/ YourDaddy123

CaliFemme I thought you were an enlightened poster but its clear you are a fool. Reticent knowledge from a college degree? That makes no sense. If you go thru the hard work of attaining a degree you WILL LEARN and have tangible skills. Thats what most employers are looking for anyway; its not the knowledge you learn from school; its the fact that you worked your ass off to do it.

Pretty clear you never graduated from college. Right?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/vasco5/ vasco5

i think both of you have a point.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/easy_one65/ easy_one65

A four-year degree don’t mean shyt in today’s job market. The world is flooded with “formally educated” people who have formal skills and still can’t get a phucking job because of market forces (downturn in employment) or business politics (i.e., nepotism). The best education anyone can give themselves is a open mind to learn continuously throughout their life. They must also know that the elixir of a real education begins outside of a formal classroom, where the pressure to subconsciously “compete” with others to make the grade is eliminated. Also, in real life, there are things that young Black males will learn about themselves through self-discovery and self-awareness that can’t be taught in a classroom or even by the most knowledgeable Black man on planet Earth. Role models are fine, but there will come a point in your life where you will have to discover who “you” are…and no one can teach you that.

Don’t get me wrong. A formal education is good, but it is not the end-all tool toward success in life. There are just some things in life that can’t be taught in a classroom, whether it be for business, social relationships, entrepreneurship, politricks, Black history, survival skills, planning for future, etc.

YourDaddy123, You need to read ‘easy_one65′s post before you lodge the insults my way dear…What about me makes it ‘pretty clear’ that I never graduated from college since YOU know me oh so well?…..

So, because I posted what I did, discrediting that college ‘dream’, you A*SSume I didn’t graduate? First of all I did in fact graduate from college, which is why I can call it 90% bullshyt, and I will also tell you the career I am in now has NOTHING to do with what I learned in college you moron. Yes I spent all those years in college to get that shiny piece of paper that EVERYONE told me was going to GUARANTEE the ‘world’ being mine to choose from…THEN REALITY HIT ME! That degree meant nothing. The connections I had aided in my working where I do now. I had tangible skills BEFORE I set foot in college sweetie. The fck you think black people do before they hit college anyway? Pick cotton or something?

“Thats what most employers are looking for anyway; its not the knowledge you learn from school; its the fact that you worked your ass off to do it.”

What kind of sense does that comment make???? Employers aren’t judging you on what you learned in college, but instead they just want to know you worked your ass off? GTFOH! I guess that’s why you voted for Bush huh? Not for what he learned in college, but because he worked his ass off in the process right? I’m sure his hard work makes him a better man than the actual knowledge one would expect….

I Know college is a scam and all but yall need to be honest with yourself. Who do you think someone is going to hire if they have two good candidates? Someone with a degree or someone without one?? If you doubt what having a degree does for you, just look at the salary curve and you are sure to change your mind.

And again a degree isnt supposed to ‘do anything’ for you—-YOU make the degree work for you…It kills me how people graduate from college spending the whole 4 years not doing a single thing to prepare for their career and expect to land into their dream career just cause they have a degree…That is NOT how it works..HELL I’m 21 And I know that. Smh

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/YourDaddy123/ YourDaddy123

CF23 I stand by my original comment, you are a total fool. Anyone who would disparage anyone from higher education(particularly black people) is a complete moron.

You say a college degree is not the end all be all. Ok so whats the alternative? WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE DO BESDIES GOTO COLLEGE? Vocational school? Work? Do nothing?

You obviously havent been on many interviews or interviewed anyone. Completion of college is ALL about work ethnic; putting in the time to get the degree. Unless you are pursing a highly technical degree eg engineering, cpu sci, or math; the knowledge you learned has very little to do about getting an entry level job.

When I interview prospects its all about their work ethic not some bs whatever you wrote about(still isnt clear).

Bottom line. Get educated, get more educated, and keep getting educated. One CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MUCH education. Black people always using excuses(like you) not to educated. Needs to stop now.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CaliFemme23/ CaliFemme23

snowflakeu, You need to stop frontin’, I JUST read another forum where YOU posted a couple of choice words to some guy so umm yeah…*rolling eyes*. Go to E-Harmony if you want peace and quiet…

YourDaddy123, WOW! When did I discourage anyone from higher education? AGAIN..I WENT TO COLLEGE AND GRADUATED!!! Get ya magnifying glass and put your fckin nose on the screen and read…I WENT TO COLLEGE!!!
My point was this…No one needs to believe that college is the final answer to life. College guarantees NOTHING. You need to step outside bruh and talk to all those unemployed college grads.

And yes I have been on interviews, (Did I ever say I was jobless?), and I have interviewed people as well, and you know what my FIRST question is after I hear about how many degrees they have?? WHAT KIND OF EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE FOR THE POSITION? For instance…If I owned an engineering company or something, and two people came in for the job and one had 15 years EXPERIENCE doing the job but no degree, and the other had NO EXPERIENCE, yet spent the last 8 years in college for an engineering degree…Guess FCKING WHAT! That person with 15 years experience and NO degree gets the job from me. I never once said ‘dont go to college’, I only say have some REAL LIFE experience to go with it.
There is too much in life to bet your all on a degree. There is so much that ISN’T taught in school its ridiculous and for you to sit here and act like there is, is totally appauling, no its frightening!

I am not one of those black people that frown upon education, and YOU are a shiftless ignorant if you think I am. I am big on education and even bigger on KNOWLEDGE. There is a HUGE difference between the two, so until you show me some KNOWLEDGE, I will not stoop to your level again cuz gatdamnit it hurts being on the floor with you…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CaliFemme23/ CaliFemme23

YourDaddy123, Oh yeah, keep yo ass off my page…You ‘aint’ gone find nan notha answer or enlightenment about me there either…

Seems like every time you go to my page the shyt you post toward me gets dumber…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Johnny_Walker/ Johnny_Walker

Of course we need more Black men teaching. I think the affect on the students and communities would be enormous. I seriously can’t berate a kid (too much) for running the streets if he never had a role model to show him/her there was another choice.

    @CaliFemme23
You said: “No one needs to believe that college is the final answer to life.”

Very true..experience is where it counts..it’s just that most of a young person’s experiences in a given field come in the way of a college degree, making college a near-necessity. Relying on job experience is really the last hope for the older people who are joining the workforce in their 30s/40s+. So basically, you don’t NEED a college education, but if you want the BEST chance to get a good job, go to school.

Back on topic: We NEED more Black, male teachers/tutors and church/community leaders (not just pastors, but other leaders within the church). If anyone wanted a way to give back to their community and uplift our People, teaching is one of the best ways to do it.

It’s one of very few professions where I really went all in..and felt like my time/effort was really making a difference…plus on a superficial side, women love a guy who teaches..lol

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Im_Channoah/ Im_Channoah

Dont Give me Excuses! Talking about How a College degree dont mean anything in this Market…Black Men! Your Community Needs You! Your Family Needs You! Young little Black Children especially the Boys Need You..They need to see more examples of men in the Hood who are decent and do positive things and who make a difference…this speaks volumes to me as to how Black Men have truly truly let down their people..We need you guys to be the leaders, and help Our race to thrive…but No,,ya’ll are in Prison,or on the streets shooting up the place..you guys are leaving your families and never looking back at the sons and daughters you help make..you dont feel any allegiance to the Black Woman so there fore the Black Family is non existent..instead you are with the white woman (or every other race of woman) making Mixed kids and single handily wiping off the black race to where eventually we will cease to exsist!…Black Men Teachers are needed..but all I hear are excuses here..it seems to me that Black Men need to step up! But instead of hearing the call and rising to the challenge…Black Men get defensive,Angry, they dont want to hear what is the truth…Ya’ll are either..Dead,in prison,or with another race of woman, resentful and mad at the black women for her wanting you to be and do better..its strange to me..it really is and it’s sad

I wanted to become a teacher in my own community after my 2 son’s left home.
I can remember when in the school of education I was told as a black male I could write my own ticket- I’d be wanted and needed. There were ‘so few black males teaching’. That was in ’95.
Actually, just because of that fact, I was blatantly discriminated against even before I was even graduated. Not by my college but by the 98% of women that dominate the profession.
Even though I found a program that would finish my expenses if I contracted to stay in the inner city.
I felt it in student teaching. I felt it in every position I took the following 10 years. I changed jobs more than I did pressing clothes the previous 17 years. It wasn’t white women but actually black women.
Yea, the truth hurts ladies but believe me, you’ve hurt me.
Here in Kansas City, we’re finally undergoing a complete redo of the largest public school district by a tough new superintendent. 21 schools will be closed next school year. The ‘who you know’ bias may well be behind us.
Of course, and especially because of the recession, hundreds of teachers are laid off.
    But forgive the digression here.
The point I’d like to make is- Damn they gave me a hard time! Ladies, keep in professional in the classroom! I didn’t get into teaching to become a husband or boyfriend for that matter. I wonder if you really do care about these kids as you claim. How in the hell would you run off somebody like me?
I haven’t given up on education though, most especially my own.
I was robbed along with the kids in my community.
I’ve waited 3 years now living on my wit- legit.
Now that the smokes finally clearing here- a crashing recession sets in.
This article kind of gives the creeps though.
Black male teacher- Broke, certified & waiting.
