NEW YORK — The New York City Police Department is changing its stop and frisk forms, so cops can check off reasons for using force.

The “Reason For Force Used” field allows cops to check off a box of six selections: suspect reaching for suspected weapon, suspect flight, defense of self, defense of other and overcome resistance. An “other” box is provided for officers to provide a short explanation.

This new move will allow cops to document and justify their actions. According to NYPD officials, this will give them a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding street stops.
