A video taken from a dash cam in North Charleston, South Carolina Police Officer Michael T. Slager’s cruiser was released Thursday, showing 50-year-old Walter Scott exiting his vehicle and running away.

Scott was fatally shot by Slager as he fled on foot Saturday, prompting authorities to charge the now-fired officer with murder. The short dash cam video captures just a portion of their encounter that began when Slager stopped Scott for a broken tail light.

According to CNN:

Slager approaches Scott’s vehicle. The two men speak, and then the officer returns to his patrol car.

Scott exits the vehicle, briefly, and Slager tells him to stay in the car. Scott then gets out of the car, again, and runs away, out of the area the camera could see.

The video, which was released Thursday, also shows a passenger in Scott’s car. The passenger’s identity was not given in a police report obtained by CNN, but another officer responding to the incident said in the report that the passenger was detained and placed in the back seat of a police vehicle.

Ryan Julison, a Scott family spokesperson, told CNN that the man in the passenger seat was not related to the victim.

Earlier this week, video revealed that Slager radioed in to claim that Scott grabbed his Taser six seconds after firing the eighth and final shot. That video, however, also shows that Scott was unarmed and not in possession of the Taser, The Guardian points out.

Analysis of the police radio shows Slager, the officer who shot at Scott eight times, making the radio call announcing the shots and alleging the Taser seizure, sounding frantic and breathless at the same time as he walks slowly towards Scott’s body. “Shots fired. Subject is down. He grabbed my Taser,” the scanner audio from Slager states.

The graphic video also disputes a claim made by North Charleston police chief Eddie Driggers that the officers performed “some sort of life-saving procedure” after Scott went down.

Slager maintains that he fired because he “feared for his life.”

An autopsy showed that Scott “sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the back of his body.” His death was ruled a homicide. If convicted, Slager could face life in prison or the death penalty.
