Imagine finding out you’re expecting, even though you weren’t trying to conceive. That’s a surprise in itself. But imagine finding out a bundle of joy is on the way eight months into the pregnancy.
Now that’s an entirely different kind of surprise.
That’s exactly what happened to North Hollywood, Calif. resident Abby Wake, who dismissed her small bulging belly as weight gain or gas. From CBS Los Angeles:
“I had no symptoms,” she told CBS Los Angeles.
Her boyfriend Jarryd Gorman noticed a small belly but they both thought it was weight gain and bloat, as Wake is lactose intolerant. She also has an irregular period and says she dismissed movement as gas. “Cause it wasn’t distinct. There weren’t like kicks and huge movements. It was just like gurgles,” she said.
In fact, they didn’t realize anything was askew until Gorman touched Wake’s belly at a concert and felt a kick.
“I felt the baby kick and I looked at her and said, ‘I think you’re definitely pregnant,'” he said. “We need to go see someone straight away.”
An ultrasound performed by obstetrician-gynecologist Payman Joseph last week revealed the big surprise — Wake and Gorman would be parents in a month’s time. It may be a shock to many, but Joseph told CBS Wake’s case is “more common that most people think.”
“She’s very thin compared to a lot of the other women that I’ve seen this in,” he told the news site.
The couple is currently scrambling to get things in order before the baby boy arrives, and they are relying on friends and family to help. The two have set up a GoFundMe for the baby, who they plan to name Isaiah, to help raise funds in the short time before he arrives.
