Although African Americans make up just 13 percent of the U.S. population, we account for 37 percent of the missing in the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s database under the age of 18 and 26 percent above the age of 18. Cases involving African Americans also tend to receive less media coverage than missing Whites, with missing men of color getting even less attention.

NewsOne has partnered with the Black and Missing Foundation to focus on the crisis of missing African Americans.

Location Last Seen: Keeshae Jacobs was last seen on September 26, 2016 walking from her apartment building in the Midlothian area of Richmond, Virginia, off Erich Road.

Circumstances of Disappearance:  Jacob’s mother, Toni Jacobs, 46, told NewsOne that her daughter said she was going to spend the night at a girlfriend’s house.

She said she would call me the next day and I never heard from her again,” the mother said in an emotional telephone interview.

That was unusual, considering how close she is to her daughter.

I talked to her constantly, all day long,” Toni Jacobs said of her daughter, who was working as a clerk at a thrift store but was considering joining the military.

There’s been no activity on Keeshae’s debit cards, cell phone or social media accounts, the mother said. It was believed that no one had seen her just before the disappearance until one of her friends revealed that he had dropped her off at a house to hang with her girlfriends.

When Toni Jacobs went to the house to inquire about her daughter, she immediately became suspicious and called police. Investigators searched the house, but found no evidence of her daughter.

Her daughter’s disappearance is made fresh by the death of her son, Deavon, 25, who was killed on Jan. 8, 2017 at a Richmond hotel. James D. Henshaw, 39, is facing charges of first degree murder in the shooting, reports the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Police do not believe the two cases are connected.

Jacobs was close to her brother. “Both my children are gone,” Jacobs said through tears. “I haven’t mourned for my son. If I mourn for my son it will put me in a place where I can’t do what I need to do to get my daughter home.”

When authorities told Jacobs that something had happened with her son, she says she could feel that he had already passed away. She doesn’t have that same feeling about her daughter.

I just feel like someone has her and she can’t come home,” said Jacobs. “I just want her to know that I love her so much and I’m never giving up until she comes home.”

Last Seen Wearing: Black basketball shorts, pink and black Nike basketball shoes and a pink scarf.

Identifying Marks or Characteristics: Tattoos on her right foot, right leg and right hand of a leaf, paws and a flower, respectively.
