All you need is common sense to know that arming teachers will not make kids safer and an incident in Northern California is proof.
Dennis Alexander, a teacher who also serves as a reserve police officer (Did you read that right? He is also a police officer, which means he has training.), was teaching a class about gun safety at Seaside High School in Northern California, according to KSBW 8. Reportedly, he was pointing a gun at the ceiling when it fired and debris from the ceiling fell to the ground. Three students were injured, including a 17-year-old who suffered injuries when fragments of the bullet ricocheted off the ceiling and hit his neck.
The 17-year-old’s father, Fermin Gonzales, was upset because the school did not inform him of this so-called safety lesson. However, the incident has changed his mind about guns in schools. “I was kind of leaning toward having armed people in school in case something happened,” he said. “After today, I get why people say there should be no guns in schools…if there’s an accident, people could die. If it’s just one, that’s more than enough.” Dennis Alexander has been placed on administrative leave.
Arming teachers is horrific idea, especially when students of color are harshly and more frequently disciplined. What if a teacher feels “threatened” and decides to use their firearm? Awful idea that would only come out of the Trump administration.
