A new episode of Fox’s “Empire” airs tonight at 8/7c and Jussie Smollett is currently promoting the popular series, which was created by Oscar nominee Lee Daniels in 2015. While on “The Clay Cane Show” on SiriusXM Urban View, Smollett explained there was one thing he insisted on — his character Jamal Lyon would not have a white boyfriend.

Smollett told Clay Cane, “There was talk about Jamal having a white boyfriend and I said, ‘Fuck no!’ Not for any reason except we have a responsibility and we have a such a beautiful opportunity to show two Black men in a relationship together, in a healthy relationship  — Jamal is just getting to his healthy relationship.”

He continued, “But it was important and that wasn’t anything against white men. It was just a thing of… this is what I hope, this is what I want to see, this is what I wished I had seen as a kid because if I had seen certain things as an adolescent, I would have had a much different understanding of who I am in an earlier space. I do think that is important to show.”

LGBTQ relationships are underrepresented in in Hollywood, but LGBTQ Black relationships are nearly nonexistent. Thankfully, Smollett had the wherewithal to demand proper representation.
