Minnesota has some explaining to do. While no one should be wrongfully shot and killed by police, the family of Justine Damond, who was shot by Minneapolis police officer Mohamed Noor, is receiving a settlement of 20 million, which is nearly seven times larger than Philando Castile‘s family. Now, there is another case, Jamar Clark, 24, who was fatally shot by a Minneapolis police officer in November of 2015. His family has recently rejected a settlement.

KTSP reports, “That rejection came the same day the City Council announced a $20 million settlement in the 2017 death of Justine Ruszczyk Damond, who was white. She was killed by a police officer after she approached his squad car. That officer was convicted of murder.”
The case has now moved to mediation.
The officer was never charged in the Jamar Clark shooting and an investigation used the same narrative that Clark was shot after trying to get an officer’s gun.
On November 15, 2015, Clark was shot in the head after officers claimed he resisted arrest. Officers Ringgenberg and Schwarze were responding to a call from paramedics treating a woman who attended the same gathering as Clark. Paramedics told police Clark attempted to enter the ambulance to see the woman, resulting in a domestic dispute. She later said that Clark did not harm her.
Witnesses varied, with some saying that Clark was handcuffed while he was shot. Multiple accounts contradicted the evidence found in the case and reached the conclusion that Clark was not handcuffed.
How sad that Clark’s family is still fighting for a settlement and Damond’s family were ordered to receive $20 million within days of Mohamed Noor being found guilty of third degree murder and second degree manslaughter. He is facing 30 years in prison and it is the first-time in Minnesota history an officer, who is Black, has been convicted of an on-duty shooting.
Noor became a police officer in 2016.
On the evening of July 15, 2017, around 11:30 p.m., Damond, 40, called 911 to report a possible assault near her house. Harrity and Noor were the officers who arrived on the scene.
The officer’s body cameras weren’t on and there isn’t a video of the shooting.
Rest in peace to Justine Damond and Jamar Clark. If only justice could work for both of them, not just one.
