Arizona’s new law targeting illegal immigrants has sparked a firestorm of controversy. The law, which allows police officers to stop anyone they have “reasonable suspicion” is in the country illegally, then arrest them if they cannot provide immediate proof that they aren’t, will undoubtedly lead to an increase in racial profiling. Additionally, the de facto requirement that immigrants in the country legally have their “papers” on them at all times quite disturbingly hearkens back to the treatment of free Black Americans during slavery. It’s imperative that all people who believe in equality and civil rights speak out against this law and the potential it holds for gross abuse of authority.
