WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is signing into law legislation to provide more lunches and dinners to school children and make those meals healthier.

Speaking at an elementary school in the District of Columbia, Obama says the legislation is about doing what is right for America’s children and helping them reach their full potential. He applauded bipartisan lawmakers for passing the bill, saying it shows that both parties can come together on issues that matter for the future of children and the future of the nation.

Michelle Obama has been a supporter of the bill as part of her initiative to combat childhood obesity. The first lady joined the president at the bill signing.

The $4.5 billion measure would expand free school meals for the needy and give the government the power to decide what kinds of foods may be sold in schools.
