While some of us are recovering from Thanksgiving, there are many Americans who are losing their collective minds because of the sales on Black Friday. The day after Thanksgiving kicks off the holiday season and gives a big boast to the economy with 30 percent of annual retail sales that occur from Black Friday to Christmas, according to The Balance.
In case you didn’t know, Black Friday began 1950s Philadelphia. History.com explained,”Police in the city of Philadelphia used the term to describe the chaos that ensued on the day after Thanksgiving, when hordes of suburban shoppers and tourists flooded into the city in advance of the big Army-Navy football game held on that Saturday every year.”
The term didn’t spread to the rest of the country until the mid-1980s when retail outlets began using Black Friday to indicate stores going from “red to black,” finally turning a profit. The epic sales caused insane chaos, which lives even longer on social media.
