Black asylum seekers

The initial response from the Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has been to downplay the incident as business as usual, raising more significant issues concerning border patrol efforts. A government that prides itself on freedom and equity defending the violent actions of horseback patrols speaks volumes.

The U.S. government had a stern warning in no uncertain terms for any Haitians considering trying to flee and seek asylum in the U.S. following the assassination of the island nation's president: Don't do it.

Critics feel that prior to the election, ICE ramped up deportations and abuse among Black asylum seekers, as an estimated 16,000 immigrants from the Caribbean and Africa are being held in detention centers across the U.S.
