Elijah McClain's mother, Sheneen McClain, said she is being cautiously optimistic after the Colorado attorney general's investigation found that the Aurora Police Department employed racist tactics and treated Black people differently from others.

The Colorado police officers and paramedics involved in the death of Elijah McClain more than two years ago were indicted in an unexpected ruling from a grand jury that aims to hold them accountable.

An independent report released on Monday states that Aurora, Colorado, police officers involved in the fatal August 2019 confrontation did not have a legal basis to stop him, frisk him or physically restrain him.

Jonathan Smith of the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs will lead the initiative.
