Black Congress Takes A Stand

On Thursday, hundreds of Congressional staffers walked out of work in a sign of solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

Friday, Public Affairs Associate for the Senate, Kamau Marshall, the organizer for the walk out joined Roland Martin on “NewsOne Now” to discuss the yesterday’s Capitol Hill protest.

When asked how did the discussion come about and how was the decision made to publicly stand in support of the protests movements going on around the country, Marshall told Martin “This has always been a discussion on Capitol Hill especially with all of the Black staffers.”

Marshall said the when the hearings on Trayvon Martin began, there was an “awareness” of the issue on The Hill.

Martin asked Marshall, “What are the conversations taking place between staffers and their bosses, because they could actually have an impact when it comes to policy.

“That can be something different. It all depends on who that boss, who that member is, everyone has their different opinions, everyone has a different take on what they would like to happen or what they think is right, but for the most part I’m actually pretty suprised at most of the members. They’re actually in agreeance with what is going on right now.” Marshall then emphasized a second time that most of the members were in agreement with the protesters.

“With the climate change in politics, things are about to change due to the parties, we’ll really see if the change will really happen. If they are really for these changes now.”

Black Athletes Show Solidarity With The Movement

Over the course of the last week pro athletes have taken the court and the filed wearing “I Can’t Breathe” t-shirts and walking out with their hands up.

Their gestures are a sign of solidarity and support of all of the protests against police brutality taking place across America.

On Friday, NBA Hall of Famer, Isiah Thomas and former Washington Wizard, Etan Thomas joined Roland Martin on “NewsOne Now” to talk about athletes roles in the current fight for social justice.

Isiah Thomas told Martin, “Activism and sports have always gone hand in hand in this country and you can go all the way back to the Olympics with Jesse Owens. In sport we’ve had Muhammad Ali, we’ve had Jim Brown, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Bill Russell and a number of other athletes who have put their careers [on the line] and have also expressed their opinions within the sporting arena.”

The former Detroit Piston continued, sports has “always been a place where society has really come to discuss really tough, hard issues because sports is the place where you’re supposed to have a level playing field, you’re supposed to have equality for all.

Thomas continued, when you look at sports, “it’s not surprising to me that this will be the place for activism.”

Etan Thomas said “I commend all of the different athletes for being able to stand up for what they believe in, especially because they know the criticism is going to come.”

Thomas also recounted an interview conducted on “The Collision” with Dr. John Carlos who talked about the criticism he and Tommie Smith experienced after the 1968 Olympics.

Thomas explained the Olympians were ridiculed, demonized and people tried to “tear down their whole message” in the same fashion as the media is trying to do with today’s athletes that are taking a stand for social justice.

Watch Martin, Isiah Tomas, Etan Thomas and the “NewsOne Now” panel discuss the issues surrounding pro athletes and taking a public stand in support of the #BlackLivesMatter, #ICantBreathe and #HandsUpDontShoot movements.

Should athletes continue to speak out publicly even though they may be putting their careers on the line?

Healthy Eating During The Holidays

America’s Nutrition Coach, Dr. Ro, joined Roland Martin on “NewsOne Now” to share her healthy holiday eating tips.

Dr. Ro suggested that viewers eat light before going to their office parties. They should start the day with a cup of yogurt and a piece of fruit for breakfast and then “graze throughout the day.”

Ro offered grazing as a solution to curb excessive eating at holiday parties and get-togethers. She said viewers should graze prior to the party so that you are not “ravenous.” Dr. Ro added this way your eyes won’t get “really big and then the next thing you know you’ve over eaten.”

Chris Rock’s ‘Top Five’

Funnyman Chris Rock spoke with Roland Martin, host of “NewsOne Now” about his new film, “Top Five.” Rock writes, directs and stars in the film. The semi-autobiographical comedy has received some Oscar buzz from industry insiders.

During their sit down, Rock told Martin, “There’s not a lot of the movie I haven’t experienced on some level. I made it funnier than it actually happened, but yeah that’s how it is to be on the road, that’s how it is to do a press junket, that’s how it is when you have a movie coming out.”

Rock continued, “That’s how it is when I go to the projects, when I go back to my old neighborhood. It’s kinda like that.”

“Some people are mad, some people are happy, some people are like I’m funnier than him. It’s kind of my life,” said Rock.
