A family in Houston is mourning the loss of their 19-year-old son, who accidentally killed himself while taking a selfie with a loaded gun.

Deleon Alonso Smith was taking photos with a firearm Tuesday afternoon when he shot himself in the throat, CNN reports. Smith was just 24 hours away from starting his first day of community college. Speaking with reporters, Smith’s family members said the father of two was excited to continue his education.

Click2Houston reports:

“It’s the worst feeling in my life,” said the victim’s uncle Eric Douglas.

“It’s a numb feeling. It’s still unbelievable. Yesterday was my birthday and he came to wish me happy birthday, and now this kind of news,” said Smith’s grandmother Alma Douglas.

His cousin, who was in another room when Smith died, said they found the gun earlier that day, but it’s unclear where. Police have launched an investigation into the tragic accident.

This isn’t the first time an individual has killed themselves while posing with guns. In 2014, Oscar Aguilar killed himself during a photoshoot in Mexico City. While the 21-year-old was partying with friends, he picked up the .45-caliber pistol and accidentally pulled the wooden trigger, shooting himself in the forehead.
