The amazing story of two boys who were put in a Mozambique orphanage after their parents died from AIDS, have beat all odds and remained friends through it all is touching the hearts of many worldwide.

But Afonso Slater and Kelvin Lewis, who will both be attending Brigham Young University in Utah this fall, have an even more coincidental story than one could think. The two were adopted from the same orphanage by families who lived in the same Phoenix suburb.

The families of the two boys, now teenagers attending high school in Gilbert, Arizona, say they believe it was a miracle they ended up in the same town.

NBC News reports:

“A lot of people, when they’re going through something, they’re like, ‘No one understands me because I’m going through my own issues.’ Everyone else has their own thing. But Afonso is the one who understands me. Because whatever I went through, he went through,” Kelvin, whose mom died of AIDS, told NBC News.

“It’s almost impossible that two little boys out of 1.5 million orphans in Mozambique would land in Gilbert, Arizona, a mile apart from each other,” Lacinda Lewis, Kelvin’s adoptive mom, said.

“I think there’s divine providence in that,” added Sharon Slater, Afonso’s adoptive mom. “I can’t explain it any other way.”

The boys, who lean on each other for support but also engage like typical teenagers (while Afonso believes Kelvin is better looking, he told NBC News he “gets more girls”), are inseparable. So it’s no surprise that they are carrying their bond to college.

“We’re eternal friends,” Afonso said. “Our kids [will be] growing up together, the same neighborhood, maybe neighbors, growing fat together.”
