black-men-jail

For some reason, we live in a nation that has consistently avoided having an honest conversation about race and the criminal justice system.  While Attorney General Eric Holder is very quick to blame black men for the outcomes of their lives, he doesn’t seem nearly as confrontational when it comes to dealing with America’s commitment to mass incarceration.  Not only are black men being arrested, convicted and imprisoned at holocaust proportions, but many of them are being charged with crimes they did not commit.

According to the Innocence Project, of the 247 post-conviction DNA exoneration’s they reported, 148 were Black men, who served an average prison sentence of 13 years before being released; in addition, 18 of the men exonerated had confessed to crimes that they did not commit.  Elliot Millner, legal advisor for the Your Black World Coalition, states that we should “keep in mind that these are only the exoneration’s reported(the first DNA exoneration did not take place until 1989), and also that these are only DNA exoneration’s, not including other exoneration’s of innocent individuals not based on DNA.”

RELATED: Study: 1 In 4 Black Male High School Dropouts Are In Jail

There are over 2 million people in prison, nearly matching the population of Houston, the fourth largest city in the United States.  In 1980, there were three times more black men in college than in prison.  Now, there are more black men in prison than in college.   If you are somehow convinced that these disparate outcomes are due to the fact that black men are more likely to be criminals than the white kids who get crazy at campus fraternity parties, then you probably don’t need to be reading this article.

RELATED: OPINION: Heal The Prison System

As we talk about the issues faced by black men, there must be a consistent conversation about disparities in sentencing, marginalization after incarceration and horrifically high unemployment numbers.  If we can’t talk about these issues in an honest and forthright way, then speeches on personal responsibility by Eric Holder will have almost no impact.   The use of mass incarceration to exterminate African American families is not only counter productive, it is also an expensive remnant of our Jim Crow past.  America should try to be better than that.

I understand and agree with most of what was said in the article. Black men are often targeted by police. They are under represented in court. Their sentences are usually more severe than their white counterparts.

However, there still needs to be more emphasis on personal choices and accountability. I grew up in the ghetto, I MEAN THE REAL GHETTO, but I had parents who actually cared about me, and instilled a love of books and learning in me. I was constantly being told that I was smart and that if I did well in school, I could accomplish anything. I was taught that being smart was COOL.

Flash forward to the future… Talking like a runaway slave with hot grits in your mouth, is cool. Dressing like a circus clown with a diaper full of feces, is cool. Idolizing rappers who drop their sperm in every trick they meet, and then get sent to jail for weapons charges, is cool. Being a violent troglodyte with no future, is cool. Until black men decide to save themselves, why should anyone else waste their time?!

@aggressiveFRUIT, your comment was on point, keep in mind though, the only real difference between you and those brothers you describe is, that most didn’t have that strong foundation at the home that you had. This is key in the development of our people. I applaud you in what you were able to accomplish in spite of your environment, but what now comes naturally to you, is very difficult for these brothers to comprehend, because a ghetto mindset is all they know. By the same token, I don’t think they should be mistreated by the judicial system. Justice should act in accord with the facts, and not the personal feelings of the officer, judge or jury.

Its either put black men in prison or kill them, which is actually happening right now.black men are such a threat to white corporations and CEO’s that they have to be taken off the street.they are smart and are quick learners.they are a threat to white men.in business and in love.so either they go to prison or die!

it’s easy 2 judge and post-judge your livelyhood and contrastly compare your up-bringing with your Neighbors in your surrounding community but it also affirms the sterile views of Brothers/Sisters like you that have the mentality of I made and fuk them……thats either being plaqued by the abusive rhetoric or just being punked and stygmatized in your community as A coward or other names that can cause harsh systems of self esteem and the solemn Love that you should have attained and obtained knowing and also being developed within that constraint of systemmatic oppression shewed upon the mental of Generations within our communities…..Projects/Ghettos have been the gripes of US/WE 2 feel disdain for ourselves in thinking that us being downtrodded and economically disheveled caused us 2 think irreprehensively of our TRUE WORTH!!
We are and still are being consumed 2 conform 2 America and it is commonly done in other fashions and venues as in Music, Fashion, Politics 2 subliminally have your mind enrapped around a method of lifestyle that presents ill-fated fatalities 2 us and we cannot govern ourselves/communties without SOMEONE ELSE’S HAND 2 REACH OUT AND ASSIST….when that Hand will keep you in your condition……I am A product of the Ghetto which gives me more meaning 2 LOVE & WORK 4 us as a people no other race is on my agenda until our Ills have been repressed!!!

I cannot finish what I have 2 say but I pray you get the gist of what I am trying 2 convey 2 you

@_A_…I do not agree with the way our ‘system’ is run or aimed at our people…BUT I am definately not in agreeance with those who choose to LEAN on the fact of their environment halting progress in life. Once again, we need to stop giving people crutches because there are HUNDREDS of people who grew up in foster care, adoptive homes,on the streets, in ill households that STILL managed to ‘make it out’. It’s all about one’s own WILL to become something other than the easy thug/dealer/hoochie/babymomma that the environment claims they have to be. A very close friend of mine was physically/mentally abused as a child/teen…he had NO foundation at home what so ever..and he is now an attorney with a private practice…atmosphere should have NOTHING to do with what you do with your life.

I hear you CaliFemme23, but believe me, my intention is not to give anyone an excuse or a crutch to justify bad behavior. On the other hand, anytime anyone wants to make an attempt at meaningful problem solving, the first and most critical thing that must be done is to identify the causes. Cause and effect goes hand in hand, and the moment we try to separate the two, is the moment the process of constructive change breaks down. Look at all the incarceration of our brothers, more hi tech ways of fighting crime, DNA tests etc. that increase the chances of a person getting caught. Then factor in the long sentences, in harsh living conditions or the uptick in executions, yet none of these things seems to have addressed the prevention issue. Are these things put in place to act as a deterrent? If so, it doesn’t seem to be working. I contend that its not working because its not addressing the real cause of the effect we see. Trust me Cali, I’m the LAST person to justify ghetto behavior, but I think I have a pretty good idea how that’s developed and how to solve it. I really have to disagree with you on it being one’s own will to “make it out” I really think it takes more than a strong will. Ok, I will stop there since I could go on and on. holla back!

You have to wonder why Attorney General Holder and others specifically the Chief Officer Mr. President Obama is not comfortable and refuse to have an honest discussion about race, race relations and disparity in the criminal justice system. When Obama did not speak out openly in the Professor Gates Vs. The policement incident, he passed on an opportunity to have a real, frank discussion about police and their mistreatment of African Americans. The President had a closed “beer summit”. I knew then that he was not the man to lead us. Blacks are so brainwashed with white idealogy. Obama and Holder and others sit by quietly while black men and women are being arrested and incarcerated at alarmingly high rates and nobody in a postion to make change cares. I wish Obama and Holder could see that this is a waste of the taxpayers money. Money spent to prosecute frivolous lies are a waste to the system. We need a different Attorney General and a different President. We need someone who is not afraid to discuss issues affecting our community. Bravo to Dr. Boyce Watkins and Journalist Roland Martin who are not afraid to speak the truth.

Constructive criticism is always around but lets shed light on the truth of the matter:

let’s pre-date these ordeals 2 the 1950′s, 60′s & 1970′s and we get the beginning of nlggers trying 2 win the potential love that white america has 2 offer since the late 1800′s….into the 1950′s Ghettos began 2 sprout up and the most valuable parts of the City which are all known as Downtown of whatever city you in(mines is Chicago)was stolen and robbed from you by any means necessary thru riots or whatever form of JUST-US white America chose the introduction of welfare proliferated the household and segregated the Black Man from the Black Woman making her dependant on the system of Willie Lynch politics so the decline of young black males began at this stage….and go into the 1960′s when black folk get tired of the police killing them for the fun of it and it is all justified and the era of Ghettos has developed building projects housing the poorest of the poor and I mean mentally and economically….the boom of CIVIL RIGHTS has been introduced as the “crawl B4 we walk syndrome” begans and Malcolm X wanted the overlay 4 the underplay of HUMAN RIGHTS and many Strong Black Men simply asks America “Am I A Man?!” but America chooses 2 deal with the latter and as long as this non-violent approach is evident then the amount of deaths and lynchings had increased during this tumultuous era along with Federal Government factoring in on the conspiracy of the Black Race as a whole with the influx of Heroine and Malt Liquor within our communities and the dwindling of the mom & pop stores and yet in still they pass a Civil Rights Bill 2 give U what U Begged and died for….a part of your freedom…..please note I am not disrespecting my grand/great grandparents….the 1970′s brought about the strongest of our presence within these United States because we was ready 2 Kill and Fight for our Human Rights instead of begging 2 ask America 2 PIMP US…..BPP, Nation of Islam(during the 1960′s also), community organizations that we let the COINTELPRO infiltrate and now we go along with policy and label them as GANGS and the influx of Federal Government programs got even more drastic and the incarceration level implodes within the Black Community/household because of the Heroine dilemma along with the triflin aspect of PIMPIN agenda promoted the first verbage of disrespecting the woman that gave you life in the first place and on the flip side of this the WOMEN even lower their esteem and the verbage will become a reality that is evident as I type now! the late 1970′s brought about the introduction of Crack Cocaine and proliferated into the 1980, 1990 and the millenium but the 1980′s offset the epidemic thanks 2 the economic fate of Reaganomics and unemplyment exceeded 20% and I think that number was less than the problem at hand so bye the time unemployment was spiked and offset at less than 10% the economic depression of the Drug Market was so advanced you had the favorite line of any rapper comparing the reality of working minumum wage versus the economic boom the Crack trade had 2 offer and Rick Ross also shed light on the CIA, FBI and Government agencies helping 2 assist the proliferation and genocide of Crack Cocaine within the BLACK COMMUNITIES!!! so CaliFEmme baby it’s deeper than “CRUTCHES” u speak of we are A people that have the WHOLE WORLD AGAINST US and we cannot fight back because we do not kno our worth and your own people will celebrate the conspiracy becasue they will monetarily gain while we downslide into the hell they adorned 4 us…….it’s deeper than this shlt I typed but if WE ARE NOT AWARE OF THE PLOTS AGAINST US WE WILL NOT KNOW HOW 2 ENGAGE AGAINST THE ENEMY!!!

    it is easy 2 hate…hard 2 love

Damn…I just had to have two of the most intelligent kats here on BP comment directly at me…

_A_/NANA, I agree with you again, conditions in our communities are nothing short of deplorable in my opinion. Yes I do also believe that the ‘system’ does not address the ’cause and effect’ as opposed to the ultimate punishment which we all know is the easier road than mending the issues. But how long do WE center on the ’cause’? Yes we can all think back/read/speak on what took place throughout history during the 40′s-present time, but what PROGRESS is that making? If one needs more than strong will/mind/absolution to ‘make it out’, then what would that be? I too grew up in TOUGH, I mean TOUGH areas because my family moved around a lot so I was extremely vulnerable because I never truly felt the ‘roots’ of where I lived, never ‘fit in’, ALWAYS ostracized (hope i spelled that right). I grew up in the 70′s-80′s so trust me I FELT the changes, trials and trubulations of the black community at that time. I’m not saying that what both of you great black men have stated here is not the truth OR doesnt play a part, yes it does…But what I dont understand is the many, many black people who dont take advantage of their own lives! SO what you are saying is, due to the dregs of society, that gives us the right if we choose to, to just give up and become ANOTHER statistic, to fall “into the hell they adorned 4 us” WILLINGLY might I add because that is what THEY expect for us? Yes there are TOO MANY organizations/facilities etc put in place for us to fail without a doubt…But to both of you, _A_ and NANA..I ask for greater understanding, this question…

Is the mentality, the household, the foundation of the black community so weak or underthrived to the point where it takes more than strong will to be productive and NOT fall into the ‘traps’ and ‘blackholes’ that society has set up? I guess I just dont get it completely because I always feel like the mind can be strong no matter what because if nothing else in the world WE are in control of that…

of course the mental is the healer of all your ills but I showed the level of progression(and thats a helluva way 2 state it) we have been going thru and the Black community has been programmed 2 qualm it’s natural instincts and tackle the role of the downtrodden and we have become complacent in a “sense” of that form of diminishing esteem/values/selfworth/morality/common sense and let alone the fight that overexceeds any weapon formed against us…….but these people will always advance in neutralizing the program and expand the process of genocide because it is evident that many are still in the mindset of the era of vulnerability (1960′s-present) the veracity of hate is giving 2 you on a daily regimen and reinforced through Media, radio, Clothing, Foods man they have taking your lifestyle and programmed us 2 what they want us 2 do and how we will contribute 2 this society.
I am never attacking you CaliFemme I was just makin you aware of the Social Ills set forth agaisnt us and the why the way we are and if we all know these things then maybe so many will not let the stygmatism of the agenda evolve us thru our life

The thing is CaliFemme23, most of us are not conditioned to recognize these traps and blackholes that you mention. Very few can even identify the paths early enough that is leading to them until suddenly, they are so ensnared, that its extremely difficult to escape. Ghetto life has become such a way of life, that far too many would rather die than change and sadly, it might even be easier to do so. NanaStroker has pretty much summed it up nicely enough so I won’t bother repeating it (plus I couldn’t really come close to that level of articulation anyway). Lastly, I thank you for your kind words, but honestly, I’m still trying to gain understanding for our problems so I don’t really see myself in that light. I love my people and I refuse to believe there is something inherently wrong with us. History is rife with examples of our greatness. This is why I don’t make excuses for us, we can and HAVE to do better, but I realize that as long as we live other than ourselves, we will never return to that greatness. You may have seen this website already, if not, give it a glance and see one of the things me must start to incorporate community wide. BlackStarproject.com

Oh no doubt NANA, I never see you as ‘attacking’ me (youre one of FEW who dont attack me in these forums…lol), And thank you BOTH for the breakdown. I never mean to seem harsh or insensitive to what is really going on in the black communities, it just angers me to KNOW that so many dont do anything to NOT become a statistic. Im sure the ‘evils’ that you (NANA/_A_) have spoken of are evident to ALL who encounter them. Bottomline people know right from wrong, I just wish our people wouldnt be so easy and eager to take the ‘easy’ road out, i.e. being complacent. As you stated NANA,and my question is, When will we STOP letting the stigma rule supreme. When do we stop saying ‘Oh well, this is whats out here so I guess this is all there is for me”, good gawd that bothers me!

@_A_…Why is it that hardly NONE seem to possess the proper ‘conditioning’ to deter from THIS mindset we speak of…

For the first time I came across a interesting topic expounding on the fragmentation of the Black Families. For too long we have looked at the black man in general for being incarcerated at an alarming rate, while America turned a blind eye toward the vast system set up to incarcerate blacks; thus, reinventing the slave system. It’s public knowledge that affluent families are enriched by war, and the same individuals are enriched by the criminal justice system; ergo, rage a war with the Black man and his family from birth, by denying “us” equal rights, education, and wealth; thus turning “us” into easy economical pray. Speaking from a personal experience, our race of people are maliciously pursued, and targeted by local police agencies and jailed premised on a fallacious police report. Not only are we jailed at an alarming rate, we are forcefully stopped and searched at an alarming rate. The criminal act is not done mostly by the black man, but the system set up to destroy us, and let me add, our over all lack of education and information is the linchpin that keeps the vast system thriving. Follow the false police report’s, illegal stop’s, false confessions, illegal searches and unveil the disproportionate incarceration rate of black males, and the fragmentation of our families. It’s not enough being done to stamp out police miss conduct, and the grievances that are entertained are done at a snails pace. In conclusion, I saw a doc**entary that stated, don’t come to court(police) after you caught me illegally or the wrong way, and try to make it right, catch me right and only then should you come to court and convict me for doing wrong. I believe “Don-Diva” mag. was behind the doc**entary. If I’m wrong I apologize for the mishap, and all credit is do to the author. Our ignorance is our opponent biggest weapon against us, united we stand, divided we fall!!!!!!

With much respect for my brothers and sisters and our black communities, there is a larger problem that we the blacks of the USA are not facing. And that is the simple fact that most of the time when we see one another and don’t know one another we treat each other as bad or worse than anyone else does. I am flabbergasted that as I listen to these posts you would think that we show nothing but love and respect for one another when the furthest from the truth is the truth. When I first started online I went into a chat room on BV and was surprised that most of the brothers seemed angry that I was there and most of the sisters did nothing but spit venom at people who came in that they didn’t know. Black people are always talking about fighting as if a brother from any inner city in this country hasn’t done his share. I grew up doing nothing but fighting, both mentally and physically. And the truth be told, I spent more time fighting the people in my own neighborhood about the way I speak, I fought with my friends on the streets and had to stand my ground for my right to be able to finish high school, they sat around in groups and thought they were really doing something by laughing at me because I refused to drop out, in fact I laughed right along with them while packing my books to study.
To all the brothers who keep posting about the system wanting to lock all black men up, if that were so, it wouldn’t be such a difficult thing to do seeing as how all many black men do in the ghettos of this country is talk about how other people treat them; how about how they treat themselves. How about the fact that we are the only race of people who walk this planet whose women want to choose them by what they drive, how tall they are, or whether they are light or dark skinned. I go to Brookly a couple times a week and for years I have wondered why it is that black women see me on the train and will go to the other end of the car to sit, and these are people who couldn’t afford to have a conversation with me; oh that’s right, a black man on the train couldn’t possibly have anything right, yet even mayor Bloomberg rides the train to work. We have become more racist against one another than anyone else in the world and trust me there are still plenty of people out there who can’t stand to see black coming.
As far as the law is concerned, they know most black men either can’t or won’t afford to have a good lawyer, meaning you want to get past the justice system crap and beaurocracy, whether you are innocent or guilty, you need a lawyer (and it wouldn’t hurt to able to speak English). That is the lesson my friends on the street never learned and it seems to be the lesson many brothers don’t get. You want to have a chance in hell of making it through your own life in one piece, get a skill, if you commit crimes, get a lawyer, then learn to speak the language. Wwhether you go to college or not, if you don’t have a skill you will always have to fight for a position and they are becoming scarce.
Last but not least, I’m flabbergasted by what some of the sisters post here, especially when on the streets, I get nastier attitudes from many black women than I do from all other races put together. If anything is really to be affected our women have to alter their spiteful and hateful behavior, and for those who say this is not you, let me be quite clear…I have been in the New York are for over 20 years now and I have never dated an African American women, in fact, most of the African American women I meet don’t seem to have much self respect, forget about respect for someone else. FYI, i’m not positng this out of anger or to vent, but the reality is if you want to see a change, start with yourself and then expect it from others. Everyone in this country knows that black people keep the prison system in business, but if we don’t change how we treat and see one another, we can’t expect others to change the way they see or treat us. Don’t think they are not watching and listening, or you are a fool. YOU want change, look in the mirror and start with yourself, the next time you see a brother or sister you don’t know, smile :) instead of dropping your head or smirking.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CaliFemme23/ CaliFemme23

nealbuilt, Bruh, I agree with you on SO many different levels…But you are a hypocrite. You say we need to start within ourselves to get along, we want change look at YOU as a person..check ourselves and our attitudes..BUT you previously spend an entire paragraph and some change going on about WHAT THE BLACK WOMANS PROBLEM IS! SMH@that. Now first of all, I hope you arent basing all of your chagrin on black women from the ones that reside in NY..My grandmother was born and raised in NY, we often times visited there and I must say that NY has some of THEE MOST aggressive, attitude packin, hostile WOMEN period! Including my grandmother. Notice I said WOMEN…because the hispanics are JUST as bad…How about you NOT generalize.

Youre wrong again when you say WE are the only race walking the planet that choose someone based upon what they have….NOT! Question for ya: Do you REALLY think Tiger’s goofy azz would have pulled over 12 different women had he NOT been and possess what he does? OOPS! THOSE WERE ALL WHITE WOMEN! Not NAN black one in the bunch. Tiger without his money, standing is JUST another 40 year old VIRGIN! Im going to leave it here though, I could on forever about this one…stop blaming US black women for YOUR short comings, and lack of being able to find a GOOD one of us..we do exist!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/nealbuilt/ nealbuilt

First and foremost my point still stands, because I can easily say that I don’t find this so much when I leave New York either though plenty of people all over the country have expressed to me how they do see this all over. Secondly, that’s a large part of my point, it seems women like you are quick to yell get a job or get a life at any comment made by someone that you disagree with, I one don’t need a job, never have and never will, and two have no problem finding a woman, just one that I want to keep. And I absolutely am a hypocrit just like most people in some way on any given day will contradict themselves, it’s part of human nature, like the right to change ones mind, if they have one to begin with. I don’t claim to be perfect or right, my opinion is no different than anyone else’s, as the joke goes “we all have one and they all stink”. But what I will say is, you can post and feel any way you want, it’s not going to affect the rate at which black men are being incarcerated or the way we are treated in our own communities untill it effects the way people perceive themselves and the people around them. It is true, many governments treat their own people much worse, just take a short historical look back at China and Tienenman Square, the Chinese are some of the worst human rights violators on the planet, I can go on giving examples of manners in which the wealthy have tried to either exploit their people or dispose of them through genocide. The question is does that really excuse our behavior here? And do you want to be compared to nations that practice population control through such extreme measures? We are better than that, yet some of us are still to act like it. And shortcomings? I have none. I am a self proclaimed intellectual elitist.

it’s easy 2 judge and post-judge your livelyhood and contrastly compare your up-bringing with your Neighbors in your surrounding community but it also affirms the sterile views of Brothers/Sisters like you that have the mentality of I made it! and fuk them!……thats either being plaqued by the abusive rhetoric or just being punked and stygmatized in your community as A coward or other names that can cause harsh systems of self esteem and the solemn Love that you should have attained and obtained knowing and also being developed/inbred within that constraint of systemmatic oppression shewed upon the mental of Generations within our communities…..Projects/Ghettos have been the gripes of US/WE 2 feel disdain for ourselves in thinking that us being downtrodded and economically disheveled caused us 2 think irreprehensively of our TRUE WORTH!! So we choose 2 LASH OUT AT PEOPLE WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY THAT HAS A VISION AND HAS SURPASSED THE MENTAL ANGUISH SO MANY OF HIS CHILDHOOD ASSOCIATES WILL CHOOSE 2 DOOM THEMSELVES WITH OR BLOSSOM LATER IN LIFE AFTER ENRICHMENT OF SELF-LOVE/RESPECT/ADMIRATION/SACRIFICE
We are and still are being consumed 2 conform 2 America and it is commonly done in other fashions and venues as in Music, Fashion, Politics 2 subliminally have your mind entrapped around a method of lifestyle that presents ill-fated outcomes 2 us and we cannot govern ourselves/communties without SOMEONE ELSE’S HAND 2 REACH OUT AND ASSIST….when that Hand will keep you in your condition……I am A product of the Ghetto which gives me more meaning 2 LOVE & WORK 4 us as a people no other race is on my agenda until our Ills have been repressed!!!

And yes nealbuilt I kno whatever I type is being read but I DON’T GIVE A FUUUKKK!

Stand 4 Something or Fall 4 anything….at this point in my life fear is not an asset nor will it B an option

Frankly, I don’t judge anyone or anything, since I left my own blue collar environment, it has been my place to practice being non-judgmental. I developed this philosophy for exactly the reasons you stated Mr_NANA…I spent much of my youth trying to convince my friends they could finish school and they did their best to convince me that I didn’t need to. And as far as coward goes, I didn’t run the streets, I ran the streets, along with the other kingpins etc. that is all I will say about that. What I will say is judge not lest be judged. I ran the streets with the baddest GANG LEADERS on the streets, and kicked butt to be myself, and still went to school and had the opportunity to graduate early. As far as value goes, I epitomize strength, I was analyzing advanced literature in high school and in college when I got around to it, I was a catalyst for the reform of their English curriculum and requirements. I’ve spent many hours trying to encourage other black men to be more responsible for their mentality and just like this dialogue, many were more interested in getting me to change than they were in being successful in their own lives. It is still shocking to me how we like to espouse cliches like “stand for something”, well newsflash, I don’t stand for something, I stand for being your own man and allowing nothing to shake your foundation whether it be white America or a black ghetto, I also stand on top of this like king of the mountain; it’s all the same to me; I have overcome and if you are worth your salt, you will do the same. Also, if you need help overcoming and being your own man, find someone with qualities that you admire and get yourself some help. By the way, if you don’t know what a man’s journey has been, you shouldn’t assume. I’ve knocked down, broken through and ran around a lot of walls in my life, it is what I live for. My favorite saying as a child “I can’t stop myself, what makes you think you can stop me”. Live and learn.
