wright-and-obama

Reverend Jeremiah Wright had an interview with the Washington Post this week. He talked about his relationship with President Barack Obama and said he probably wouldn’t talk to him till he left the White House. Here’s some excerpts from the interview.

It is unrealistic to think that one person can change the mess that this country has gotten into, but to pick on him is like picking on one of my kids,I have been knowing him for 20 years.

I have not stopped loving him because of what the press did, and to see him beat up on because of things he is not responsible for is painful.

He also said that the controversy around him, led to his daughter getting into a fist fight at Florida A&M University and blamed Fox News for disrupting the lives of his family.

The day I took Jamila to campus, Fox News was on the sidewalk taking my picture. My granddaughter got into a fistfight at FAMU [Florida A&M University] because people only know the press narrative about Jeremiah Wright, The press didn’t care what they did to my family. They ruined their senior year in high school. They were at the senior prom, the graduation, waiting on something to try to destroy Obama.

    Rev. Wright is a good man and that’s that. For those who question his intentions and motives, are questioning the Most High’s word.

    The Right-wing media did a ‘Willie Horton’ on Rev Wright. Because his comments went public during the primaries, the Clintons backed away from him even though they themselves have been to dozens of Black churches and heard the same types of lessons/sermons. It was a sick time. Obama had to back away from Rev Wright for political reasons. You might not be impressed with him in office so far, but to question his blackness is just stupid.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/doing_me74/ doing_me74

    why question his blackness is stupid ?

    @doing_me74, SoularFlarez

    I don’t see the point in questioning anyone’s Blackness…especially since the Blackness “scale” is totally imaginary..

    I was called ‘white’ when I got As in school and studied on my own, but called Black when I dunked on someone who spit a fierce verse on stage..does that make sense?

    So basically, my thinking is that people who say others aren’t ‘Black’ enough, say it out of selfishness..It’s a ‘scale’ built on what the person has done for YOU and the things YOU like.

    But I guess I’d still have to ask a question: What could Obama do to be ‘more Black’ in your eyes?
    (I’m guessing it has something to do with helping you and yours?)

    In any case, since Obama isn’t Black enough:

    -I guess Healthcare Reform won’t help any Blacks without healthcare (cuz we all have HC, right?)
    -repealing DADT wouldn’t help some of us either (ain’t no gay Blacks, right?)
    -his mortgage assistance programs certainly won’t help Blacks at all (cuz none of us lost our homes or have trouble with our mortgages, heh?)
    -that bill he signed to outlaw pay discrimination doesn’t help out Blacks either (cuz we all make the same amount, right?)
    -his State Children’s Health Insurance Program extension only helped an additional 4 MILLION children (not one of them Black, huh?)
    -I’m not even going to bring up his hate crimes bill.. (we all know that that couldn’t POSSIBLY help Blacks in any way..)

    I gotta ask again: What else do you want?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Johnny_Walker/ Johnny_Walker

    my bad…that makes NO sense lol

    I meant I was called Black “when I dunked on someone ‘OR’ spit a fierce verse on stage..”

    @Johnny Walker

    Please briefly outline how these programs help black people. In fact, when you look at the economics of it, it doesn’t even help white people. You’re being fooled if you think Healthcare “helps” anyone except the the healthcare providers and the insurance carriers. Mentioning the loan modification program has to be a joke right? Go check realtytrac.com for a wake up call. These so called loan modification programs are useless unless you’re adjusting the principle. People are underwater in homes that have dropped 20-50% in value in some cases, so while simply rearranging some payments here and there, or extending the time allotted may make for a great campaign speech, it DOESN’T help anyone. Go to the hood, any hood and show me any measurable improvement you find in the quality of life for blacks, that are a direct result of those programs. Save the campaign speech for the politricksters!

    @Johnny_Walker It really boils down to who raised Obama. Unlike his wife he was raised by his white side of the family as his father abandoned him. Which is shocking considering his educational and he was directly from Africa. He just doesn’t come off as black man that puts fear into these white people heart. He left Rev. Wright hanging just so he would’nt look so bad to the media. Personally I think all minorities need to form there own 3rd party as the current ones suck monkey nutz in the first place.

    @_A_
    I think the misconception is that you think Obama’s legislation should have ‘saved’ these people in mortgages they couldn’t afford. Or maybe you believe that’s what I think.

    Whatever you believe, the mortgage crisis is the homeowners responsibility first. I used to originate loans and TEACH mortgage law in Maryland. What I saw was that people knowingly sought out loans for properties that they knew they couldn’t afford after the first few months. I turned down several clients because of this. The PROBLEM was that many brokers still gave them the loan and the banks started incentivising brokers to sell these volatile loans. I say all that to say that the issue so pervaded this country that the United States almost started to collapse inward. No single piece of legislation could EVER grant everyone a permanent reprieve from the situation that they got themselves into. It’s not that easy.

    And if it helped for a few months..guess what: It helped. What else can the government do? At some point, the blame has to fall on the citizens for walking into the bad situation in the first place.

    And as for your ‘hood’ comment. I’m from there. I know it well. And what I know is that many people there don’t have health insurance, complain about unequal pay, are victims of hate crimes, and have babies that need healthcare. All things that Obama’s legislation has helped (and I listed below).

    You’ll always be able to find a negative example, but don’t act contrite and call my comments a “campaign speech for the politricksters” because it proves you’re wrong.

    Oh, and you’re lying or just really, really naive if you think that “Healthcare [doesn't] “help” anyone except the the healthcare providers and the insurance carriers.”

    That doesn’t even make any sense.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Johnny_Walker/ Johnny_Walker

    @Sub-Negro
    I completely understand where you’re coming from, but Obama never said he wanted to devote his life to the Civil Rights Movement or follow in MLK’s footsteps. And I would have separated myself from Rev. Wright as well if I were in Obama’s political shoes.

    But then again, I don’t think like many of you here on BP/NewsOne. I believe that it’s folly to act as if White people are all Devils, and we should stay away from them, because they all secretly hate us.

    If you’re drowning and a White hand reaches down for you, do you wait for a Black hand or do you grab it. And conversely, if you see someone drowning/dying, do you make sure they’re Black before saving them?
    (Some answers to this question make me glad that I call myself Christian first, and don’t really care what anyone else calls me at all.)

    A healthy concern for dishonest people is completely necessary, but taking it to the extreme doesn’t sound smart to me. Personally, I can’t talk trash about another race, knowing that my own race isn’t perfect and I still haven’t done enough to change things for my people. Something about glass houses..

    With respect to the “Home Affordable Modification Program:

    It absolutely has not done what is was intended to do.

    Only three servicers have signed up; no second liens have been modified; it’s a year into the program,” said Eleanor Holmes Norton, a Democrat who represents the District of Columbia. “That’s beyond failure, beyond fixing. Maybe it needs to be totally rethought.” Citigroup announced its participation today, bringing the total to four.

    “It has failed and it has failed miserably,” said Representative Jackie Speier, a California Democrat, said at a House Oversight and Government Reform committee hearing on the Home Affordable Modification Program. “Unfortunately we are incapable of saying that it was a failure, it was an experiment, it didn’t work, let’s try something else.”

    These are democrats. I thought most of us took their word as gospel

    According to the governments plan after modification payments can’t be more than 31% of income. The overall unemployment rate is 9.9%. The solution is obvious.

    Stop fattening banks, big insurance companies, and big corporations. Seriously address unemployment. Maybe then folks can stand a chance of paying their mortgages.

    The socalled Healthcare Reform Bill is an absolute farce.

    Here is what Healthcare-NOW has to say about it:

    About 23 million people will remain uninsured nine years out resulting in an estimated 23,000 unnecessary deaths annually.

    Millions of people who are not eligible for public health insurance programs Medicaid and Medicare will be pressured to buy commercial health insurance policies costing up to 9.5 percent of their income but covering an average of only 70 percent of their medical expenses, potentially leaving them vulnerable to financial ruin if they become seriously ill. Many will find such policies too expensive to afford or, if they do buy them, too expensive to use because of the high co-pays and deductibles.

    Those remaining uninsured will be fined up to 2.5% of their income.

    Insurance firms will be handed at least $447 billion in taxpayer money to subsidize the purchase of their shoddy products. This money will enhance their financial and political power, and with it their ability to block future reform.

    The bill will drain about $40 billion from Medicare payments to safety-net hospitals, threatening the care of the tens of millions who will remain uninsured.

    People with employer-based coverage will be locked into their plan’s limited network of providers, face ever-rising costs and erosion of their health benefits. As the cost of insurance grows, they will be taxed on their benefits.

    Health care costs will continue to skyrocket, as the experience with the Massachusetts plan (after which this bill is patterned) amply demonstrates.

    The much-vaunted insurance regulations – e.g. ending denials on the basis of pre-existing conditions – are riddled with loopholes, thanks to the central role that insurers played in crafting the legislation. Older people can be charged up to three times more than their younger counterparts, and large companies with a predominantly female workforce can be charged higher gender-based rates at least until 2017.

    It allows insurers to expand so-called wellness programs that let insurers penalize subscribers by hundreds—and even thousands—of dollars for not meeting certain ‘wellness targets,’ such as a particular cholesterol number, blood sugar measurement or body-weight target.

    Women’s reproductive rights will be further eroded, due to segregation of insurance funds for abortion from all other medical services.

    Please people don’t take pleasure from these socalled incremental improvements.

    As you can see they aren’t anything to brag about.
