A police officer is being praised for his kind gesture towards a man who was kicked off a New Jersey bus for not wearing any shoes.
The Huffington Post reports Kenya Joyner of the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) was on his route Saturday afternoon in Lindenwold, New Jersey when he was flagged down by a bus driver, who complained about a middle-aged passenger who wasn’t wearing any shoes. Since passengers are required to wear footwear on PATCO High Speed Line buses, Joyner escorted the man off the bus.
Joyner said he recognized the man after seeing him on a bus bench a few hours earlier. Instead of arresting him, he asked the man his shoe size, walked into a Payless shoe store, and purchased a pair of boots for him.
Kayla Palmer of Pine Hill, New Jersey caught the act of kindness on camera. The video was uploaded to Facebook and has since gone viral.
The Huffington Post reports:
“I just felt like the gentlemen simply was on hard times. He wanted to ride on the bus but he couldn’t afford shoes; there was no need for me to arrest him for that,” Joyner said.
John Hanson, CEO of the Delaware River Port Authority, praised Joyner’s kind gesture. “I think he did the right thing. He went above and beyond. He was his best self I think in that action and he set an example for all of us,” Hanson told KYW-TV.
