Nearly a month after her passing, an 82-year-old’s death has been ruled a homicide after undertakers preparing her body for a memorial service discovered a stab wound on her neck, NBC New York reports.
Myrtle McKenny was found dead in her apartment in Brooklyn, New York on Nov. 9. Initially, her doctor labeled the death natural — a result of complications related to diabetes and hypertension. McKenny lived alone, but her caretaker found her dead on her kitchen floor.
However, as the Caribbean Funeral Services prepared her body over the weekend, they noticed a stab wound on her neck, broken ribs, and bruising on her face and neck.
Her body was then returned to the New York City Medical Examiner’s office, where they discovered additional injuries. Wounds were uncovered on McKenny’s torso, as well as blunt force trauma to the head.
Police are now investigating. Eliana Garcia described her deceased neighbor as a great lady who didn’t bother anyone.
Further reports from The New York Daily News revealed family members tried to tell McKenny’s personal physician, Dr. Martin Bandler, that she was murdered. Family also told police a hefty amount of money was taken out of McKenny’s bank account before she died.
Neighbor Leon Gavin admitted he went to the bank with McKenny and watched her take out $800. Gavin, who cannot read or write, said McKenny feared someone was trying to steal from her. When he tried to relay the message to police, he was told her death was not suspicious.
