Are the Republican presidential hopefuls competing for the highest office of government, or performing in a reality show? Colin Powell said it’s hard to tell the difference, reports the Huffington Post.
Appearing Monday on CBS’ This Morning, the Post quotes the former secretary of state:
“I think the campaign has gone into the mud. The comments that they’re making toward each other, the nastiness, it’s running us into the ground. The foreigners of the world, looking at this, are distressed.”
Powell hopes the national mourning for former First Lady Nancy Reagan’s passing will usher in a period of civility.
The punchline around the world is that even Jerry Springer is shocked by the GOP candidates’ gutter talk.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Springer compared the Republican debates to a race for “junior high school class president.”
Springer told the international daily: “Clearly they could be on our show, but now they’ve gone off the deep end, and we would start bleeping out some of what they’d say.”
Powell urged the candidates to stop turning the primary race into a reality show. He added: “You know you’re in trouble when Jerry Springer even thinks it’s over the top,” the Post reports.
It’s no surprise that the retired four-star Army general, a moderate Republican, refused on the morning show to endorse any candidates in his party. In 2008 and 2012, Powell crossed party lines to endorse President Barack Obama.
