Right about now, Georgia could use a governor like Stacey Abrams. Sadly, because of voter suppression, the most vulnerable in Georgia may suffer.

The Trump administration has found a way to cut food stamps in the red state and people are suffering.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that from April to October, nearly 8,000 people have had their food stamps cut, all due to the enforcement of a work requirement law. The outlet reports, “The work requirements were passed in 1996 and require adults between the ages of 18 and 49, who are not disabled and who have no dependents, to work at least 20 hours a week or be engaged in some sort of education or work training. The food stamp program refers to these people as ABAWDs, short for able-bodied adults without dependents. The law gives them three months to meet the work requirement or lose the benefit.”

The Trump administration has been heavily enforcing the work requirements, increasing the amount of people kicked off food stamps nearly 20-fold since 2017.  Moreover, it is not that people don’t want to work, it is that many people can’t work or they can’t find a job with a living wage.

Alex Carmardelle, a senior policy analyst at the liberal-leaning Georgia Budget and Policy Institute, “People who use SNAP who can work, do work. If you are not working and you are receiving SNAP it’s because of a serious reason.”

An example is  Miraco Belcher, 25, who was injured during an auto accident, fracturing his spine. Before the accident he worked at warehouse jobs but now “suffers seizures, especially around bright or flashing lights, making it hard for him to work,” according to Atlanta Journal Constitution.

For a period, his food stamps were cut. He told the Atlanta Journal Constitution back in October, “I’ve been without stamps for two months now. It hurts. I can’t work and I can’t come up with money for groceries. If I could work, I wouldn’t need those stamps,” he said. “I just don’t really understand it.”

Thankfully, food stamps were reinstated last month and after his doctor vouched for him.

Unfortunately, many people will not be reinstated.

Make America great again.
