WASHINGTON — The minority population in the United States is steadily rising and now makes up 35 percent of the total, advancing an unmistakable trend that could render them the new American majority by midcentury.

Black Americans have historically been undercounted by the U.S. Census, and as a result our communities have missed out on federal funding and other resources that were sorely needed.

There were 784,764 U.S. residents who described their race as white and black in the last census. But that number didn’t include Laura Martin, whose father is black and mother is white.

WASHINGTON – He may be the world’s foremost mixed-race leader, but when it came to the official government head count, President Barack Obama gave only one answer to the question about his ethnic background: African-American.
