The Republican National Convention is scheduled to open Monday in Cleveland, Ohio, with a renewed focus on law and order, a day after three more police officers were senselessly shot and killed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, according to a program released Sunday.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Melania Trump, wife of presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump, retired Lieut. General Michael Flynn, and Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst are among those scheduled to speak at the kick-off program, whose theme is “Make America Safe Again.”

From attacks on our own soil and overseas to the tragedy in Benghazi, the policies of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have left us vulnerable,” the program reads. “Our immigration system is broken, leaving our country open to security threats and the negative consequences of illegal immigration. A Donald Trump administration will listen to and learn from our nation’s heroes who have put themselves in harm’s way and pursue a national security strategy and foreign policy that will strengthen our military and make America safe again.”

But Donald Trump unleashed his Twitter fingers on Sunday, tweeting the country is “a divided crime scene.” He made the statement hours after three law enforcement officers and several others were wounded in Baton Rouge.

The shootings, coming on the eve of his nomination, represent a test of Trump’s readiness to become president. Still, a Trump misstep is unlikely to sway delegates who last week shut down the #nevertrump movement. Indeed, even some of his staunchest supporters have raised questions about his strident commentary during incidents that require a measured response from a commander-in-chief. Meanwhile, President Obama called for calm.

The New York Times writes that in an afternoon message posted to Facebook, “Trump expressed grief over the loss of life. Without elaborating, he said the violence stemmed from a national leadership vacuum.

“How many law enforcement and people have to die because of a lack of leadership in our country?” Trump continued. “We demand law and order.”

While we are pleased the party is focused on the loss of police lives, we hope they will also focus on Black lives lost to police violence. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.

On Tuesday, the program will focus on “Make America Work Again.” Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is scheduled to speak Wednesday, when he is expected to be officially nominated as Trump’s running mate.

Trump will speak Thursday, when he is expected to officially be nominated for president by his party.
